carograyhi - why and where would you use two ; in a snippet?21:53
carograythat is two semicolons21:54
@Haargsemicolons don't do anything special in snippets, it depends on what the snippet is used for21:58
@Haargmacros are the only thing that snippets handle but they are processed pretty much the same as anywhere else in the system.22:00
carograyDiona sent me (through rfe) some code for a snippet http://webgui.pastebin.com/d6ced3cc I am wondering what the double semicolons are doing22:04
@Haargthe first one is part of the macro call22:07
@Haargthe second is part of the query string in the link22:08

carograyI need a refresher on templating language. I want to create intro txt for different variables depending on whether the variable is there or not. I have one for two variables, http://webgui.pastebin.com/m79278219, but what how do I do tmpl_if s if  want it to say," if created is filled in, say 'created:'" "if updated is filled in, say 'updated:'", "if revised is filled in say, 'revised'", if deleted is filled in say, 'deleted:'" etc. so 23:19
carograyis this one of those things we could use tmpl expressions that someone at the WUC was talking about where we could use Case statements - vague memory....23:20

+bartjolmm that clear options sounds rigorous, I don wanna remove content. glad that I rtfm'd17:15
+perlDreamerbartjol, there's always Manage Committed Version Tags, from the Version Tags admin console option17:16
+perlDreamertha will let you delete committed content, too17:16
+perlDreamerbut only one at a time17:16
+bartjolmm and you have to check each version tag, whether it has got the newest version, and then have to preserve that17:17
+perlDreamerthey're listed in order of commit date, so just from top down17:20
+bartjolI I think I explained incorrectly. I wanna freeze the site as is (so keeping all current content and open version tags), but remove old versions of assets17:22

chatito28Good morning i have a quick question, my site get really stop at ramdom times, the only way to speed it up to normal when this happens is by restarting all modperl service, does anybody has any ideas?18:58
chatito28i have tweak the modperl.conf to add more servers18:58
chatito28i see no errors or nothing that can give me any hints18:59
ckotilAny progress on mounting a network drive to your PC then drag and drop assets into webgui?19:00
+perlDreamerckotil, that would be WGFS, and it just needs a programmer to take the prototype code and finish it19:10
+perlDreamerchatito28, adding more servers won't always help, especially if you run out of memory19:10

ckotilperlDreamer: Interesting. is the prototype code available to public on teh dev site?19:46

dionakplenty enough to give some away01:11

dionakI thought I was earning it already. ;)01:12
dionakI'd like to say yes but it doesn't look like I'm going to have any spare time in the near future. We're looking to add a developer these days and I'm working on internet marketing in addition to other duties.01:13

dionakI have our developers do the same01:16
+perlDreamerI've been working on WebGUI 8, and the tests have been invaluable01:19
+perlDreamerthey also point out that there's still a lot of untested code in the core01:19
-!- stDavid [~stDavid@static-72-64-138-146.tampfl.fios.verizon.net] has quit [Quit: stDavid]01:20
dionakIt's helpful to have examples, from this point of view, so we can create tests and submit. 01:22
dionakGenerally, I'm basing tests on what is already in the codebase. 01:22
dionakbtw, carogrey is using a package I made out of some code for a site. Basically, it's a 'send to a friend' email feature. Is that a feature in WebGUI atm? She's exposed an issue that occurs when the PageTitle macro is called in admin mode. It returns a href instead of the page title. 01:23
dionakI'm wondering if that package is now a feature. 01:24
dionakAs a content manager, she's loving the feature. 01:25
@preactiondionak: post it as an RFE if it's not already, if you guys can do it we can put it in 7.901:25
dionakk01:26
dionakany idea why the page title returns a href tho?01:27
dionakthere's already a RFE. http://www.webgui.org/rfe/request-for-enhancement/1096901:30
dionakShould I reopen or create a new one?01:31
+perlDreamerI read that RFE, and I don't understand what the problem is01:34
+perlDreamerit sounds like there are different problems01:35
@preactionprobably because it's a retarded macro01:35
+perlDreamerin one, PageTitle returns an href whenever an op or func is active01:35
-!- sbaur [~sbaur@130.157.145.37] has joined #webgui01:35
dionakyes, which is odd considering the name of the macro01:36
+perlDreamerand in the other one, she wants some kind of email this page to a friend feature01:36
@preactionand of course the code has no reason WHY it's returned as a link, so we can't fix it01:36
@preaction...01:36
@preactioni can't wait for WebGUI 901:36
dionak9?01:37
+perlDreamerwhy not change it in 7.9?01:37
@preactionyes, the one after 8 where i get to change everything to do exactly what I want it to do01:37
dionaklol01:37
@preactionperlDreamer: because I don't know why it is the way it is01:37
@preactionsomeone must be relying on this behavior, or had at one point01:37
@preactionfor some people who write webgui code, documentation is to explain what, but never why01:38
+perlDreamerit's from 200201:38
@preactioni don't need to know what, the code tells me what01:38
@preactionwhich means for 8 years people have been relying on this feature. if we "fix" it, people will consider their code that broke a bug01:39
dionakthis is why tests are so critical.01:39
dionaknot to mention "why" in documentation. you have a good point there01:40
+perlDreamerit guess it's a nice feature for using in an email, since that's usually handled by an op or func01:40
+perlDreamerbut I would guess that no one uses that feature01:40
@preactionwe can't guess01:40
@preactionif we were guessing, i'd agree. it's an esoteric and completely useless feature01:41
+perlDreamerit would be nice to have more "why" and less "how and what" in our POD01:46
+perlDreamerdionak++01:46
+perlDreamerdionak: would ^Page('title'); work instead of ^PageTitle(); ?01:47
dionakyes, that would help in this case01:48
+perlDreamerthat only ever returns the title, without any of the funny href business01:48
-!- mducharme [~nothing@S0106000e0cc03cff.wp.shawcable.net] has joined #webgui01:48
dionakwould you like me to make an RFE for that?01:48
@preactionfor which?01:51
+perlDreamerfor changing the behavior of the PageTitle macro, or for putting in an Send this Page's URL to a friend01:51
@preactionfor the documentation thing, well, you're not going to change the dozen devs we have with an RFE01:52
dionakfor passing in the string title to the PageTitle macro to change the behavior (return just the title).01:53
@preactionugh. ugh ugh ugh.01:53
dionakit still doesn't address the long term issue01:53
@preactioni say new RFE: Remove the PageTitle macro01:53
dionakbut it would address the current issue01:53
dionaklo01:53
dionakl01:53
dionaklet's not. ;)01:53
dionakit's very useful.01:54
@preactioni mean, we have ^Page("title"); works fine01:54
+perlDreamerand in TT, we could even have page.title01:54
@preactionindeed01:54
+perlDreamerand then we can do page.session.db.dbh.write('delete from myDatabase')01:55
@preactionin TT i have plans to phase out macros completely for an alternative, but later01:55
@preactionyeah, not that01:55
@preactionDO YOU NOT TRUST ME?01:55
dionakoh, so I just need to change to Page('title')01:55
+perlDreameryes01:55
@preactionno altering anything permanent in templates01:55
@preactionbad juju01:55
@preactionand if you need a SQL query, we have SQLReport, included via [INCLUDE assetId(whatever)]01:56
dionakok, i'll try that tomorrow. In the sql report, would params still be passed through?01:57
@preactionin my perfect world, no01:58
dionakhm. 01:58
+perlDreamerwhy not, preaction?01:58
dionakwe would need someway to pass them. 01:58
@preactionbecause form params are for the page you're currently on01:58
dionakthe sql report would be on that page, no?01:58
+perlDreamerI think he means Page Layout, versus SQL Report01:58
@preactionright, i mean like how AssetProxy works, like on a style template01:59
+perlDreamerit's back to the Asset focus debate01:59
@preactionright01:59
@preactionthe pn=3 problem01:59
+perlDreamerexactly01:59
+perlDreamerwhich is why we now have really ugly pn query param names02:00
+perlDreamerpeople want the Page Layout to "frame" content transparently, instead of including it02:00
@preactionbut people also want to include content and have form parameters affect it02:00
@preactionyay!02:00
dionaki see your challenge02:01
@preactionheh, that's an EASY challenge: one people get what they want, other do not.02:01
dionakyes, i see. not passing params would break some of our sites. 02:02
dionaklike midwest heart02:02
dionakbut if there was an alternative, it could be implemented. 02:02
dionakpart of our challenge is avoiding having to create many pages for a functionality. 02:03
dionakit increases costs02:03
dionakthat's one of the benefits we are receiving from params being passed through02:03
dionakbenefit = reduced development cost02:03
dionakbut that might be minimal depending on the details. will have to give it some thought. 02:04
@preactionagain in my perfect world it would be easier to develop for webgui, as it would all be based on a common Perl ORM (DBIx::Class) and there would be helper methods that could take queries and build templates for you02:04
@preactioni've started this project at http://github.com/preaction/modern-webgui02:05
dionaki'm struck by the very few requirements02:06
dionakis that just b/c it is newly created?02:06
@preactionwell, it also requires WebGUI02:06
@preactionthose are just the extra requirements02:07
@preactionbut as i reimplement the rest of the webgui stack, i imagine many requirements will go away02:07
dionak'just' is always a red flag for me. ;)02:07
@preactionmainly because templates aren't a plugin point anymore, and other stuff. using best-of-breed stuff to do things (because they didn't exist when webgui was initially created)02:08
dionaki'll be interested to hear what you discover. are you doing this on your own or as part of PB R&D?02:08
@preactionpersonal project, which is why it's taking so long02:09
@preactioni've got an almost-reimplemented WebGUI asset02:09
@preactionit's just got a couple bugs before it can be released02:09
@preactionbut it's compatible with 7.x and when 8.x is released it will be compatible with that too02:09
dionakinteresting..02:09
@preactionthat or there will be a WebGUI::Content handler to load WebGUIx::Assets02:09

+bartjolcarogray: what is your question?16:12
carograyah thanks16:12
carograyum.. you can have old.masslegalhelp.org go to one server, and www.masslegalhelp.org go to another server i.e. PlainBlack, but16:13
carograycan you have www.masslegalhelp.org/apply-for-services be hosted on  a different server than all other pages or does it have to be apply.masslegahelp.org?16:14
carograythis isn't actually for our site. i want to host some unique pages for other domains on our server.16:14
carograyckotil: sorry didn't see you responded16:15
ckotilyou will have to add a redirect to www.masslegalhelp.org/apply-for-services redirecting you to apply.masslegalheop.org; but only iff apply.mass.legalhelp.org is on another server.16:26
ckotilif they were the same server, you could still use a redirect, but mod_rewrite is more elegant.16:27
SDuensinGreetings.16:28
+bartjolah, I see ckot* covers my absence16:31
ckotili just hope i didnt confuse carogray :)16:33

carograyI want to put a unique not-a-domain-name-we-have  page on our plainblack server16:35
carograyI think your latest answer is the unique part can only come BEFORE the domain name, not after?16:36
carograyRedirects aren't really the issue16:36
+bartjolwell, if you want another server running stuff, you'll need another subdomain16:37
ckotilif you own masslegalhelp.org you can have anything 'before' (which are subdomains) or 'after' (just part of the URL)16:37
carograyso I wanted to host the MassJusticeProject form so people could apply for services, whilst MassJusticeProject website is on some other server I can only have apply.massjusticeproject.org on PlainBlack server, but not massjusticeproject.org/apply 16:38
carograyMassJusticeProject.org is already a website on some other server somewhere16:38
carograythey own it, they can direct it, but what is physically possible?16:39
ckotilcorrect. they can point apply.massjusticeproject.org to your plainblack server16:39
ckotilOR redirect to your domain via massjusticeproject.org/apply16:39
carograyyes, but in the latter case the user would end up at Masslegalhelp.org/massjusticeproject-apply or something16:40
ckotili dunno if PB supports multiple subdomains for a site. bartjol would have to answer that.16:40
ckotilcarogray: yes they would, so that is less than ideal. yet another option is to use mod_proxy16:40
ckotilbut that gets kind of indepth, and would require a little more work on massjusticeproject's part.16:40
carograyok -  have no idea what mod_proxy is16:40
ckotilbasically you go to their domain/url, and their webserver goes to your site, gets the content, and serves it to the user. so it looks like they are still at massjusticeproject.org16:41
carograyperhaps they can live with apply.massjusticeproject.org ... and perhaps PlainBlack - I am pretty sure they 16:41
carograyoops aah Isee16:41
ckotilso you have a few options16:42
carograyI suspect there is noone over there who has the technical knowhow to do mod_proxy... is that only a webgui thing or is it a web thing?16:42
ckotilits an apache thing. i expect IIS to have a simlliar feature as well16:42
carograyhmmm - well that's all very helpful I will let them know and see what they want to do.16:43
carograythanks so much.16:43

doc777Hello friends! I am fixing to build a new webgui server and currently plan to use ubuntu server 8.04 LTS ( Migrating from gentoo ).   Will WebGUI get along with x64 or should I stick with x32?00:15
@Haargi've seen it used on a 64bit system using the 32bit wre.  we haven't had much luck getting the wre to compile on 64bit, but it that was done WebGUI itself would work fine.00:16
doc777I plan to use the wre this time.00:16
@Haargif you use the 32bit wre as far as i know everything should work fine00:17
doc777The server only has 4 gig of ram so I am not sure what I would be gaining by using the x64. Possibly speed but this machine will only be running webgui.  Do you think it would be worth the hassle to go x64?00:18
@Haarggiven the amount of ram and the fact that you would be using 32 binaries as well, it seems unlikely there would be any advantage of going to 64bit.  but i don't think it would be a significant hassle either.00:19

@preactionWHERE ARE YOU?03:07
@preactionIS THE CALL COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE?03:07
perlDreamer1well, I really thought you were still looking at the group code03:07
perlDreamer1but I've written so much of WebGUI that it's a fair guess03:07
@preactiontrue03:07
perlDreamer1of course, that also explains all the bugs and poor performance03:07
@preactionbut no, i'm writing a test for this thing03:08
+patspamheh not way, that's the code that the rest of us write03:08

@preactionokay, RDN stands for Relative Distinguished Name04:42
@preactionDN is Distinguished Name, think of it as the record's unique ID04:42
@preactioneverything in the LDAP tree has a DN, and everything except the top level has their parent in their DN04:43
@preactionso o=shawshank04:43
@preactionand cn=Warden,o=shawshank04:43
@preactionfor that, my RDN is cn=Warden04:43
@preactionmy DN is cn=Warden,o=shawshank04:43
@preactionand my parent's DN is o=shawshank04:43
@preactionSO WHY DOES WEBGUI GIVE A DIFFERENT DEFINITION TO RDN?04:43
@preactionokay, so I figured out how NORMAL ldap groups work, but wtf is a Recursive Group?04:52
@preactionokay, so I figured THAT out, but then how is this person's ldap groupings working AT ALL?04:59
mducharmeI'm here05:33
mducharmewhat do you mean it gives a different definition to RDN, preaction?05:35
@preactionin the "User RDN" field, you have to put "dn", always05:37
mducharmeum in current webgui versions there is no User RDN field05:40
mducharmeunless you mean in the user settings themselves05:40
mducharmeas opposed to the ldap config05:40
mducharmeI do not see a User RDN field in the user properties either05:41
mducharmeI do see another problem though05:42
mducharmetwo parameters that are different are using the same i18n05:42
mducharmeso one is misnamed05:42
mducharmea new i18n should be created for the matching field in the user properties05:43
@preactionah, it used to be User RDN, now it's Authentication Attribute05:43
@preactionwhich should almost always be dn05:43
mducharmeyes05:43
mducharmeI had posted a bunch of i18n changes a while back05:44
mducharmebecause things were using bizarre terminology05:44
mducharmethat user RDN was one of those05:44
mducharmeI missed what you are trying to do though, preaction05:53
mducharmeperhaps I can help05:53

carograyHi all16:24
+bartjolhi carogray16:24
carograydoing many things at once, but...is it possible to "run" not sure this is what I want to do, an xml file on PlainBlack server?16:25
carograyThere is this software called A2J which produces a kind of interview 16:26
carograyit wouldn't be in the frame of our website... I don't think.., also it uses Flash and may only work with IE, however it would be very helpful if we could upload an xml file to PlainBlack server and then have it email us16:27
carograyor allow people to email us or...16:27
carograyfeed the information to a "behind the scenes" data form and email us.16:27
carograyAll I know is that the interview is an xml file.16:27
+bartjolwell, I don't know how far they host applications next to wg16:27
carograyhow far?16:28
carograyis xml an application?16:28
+bartjolI mean, whether they host anything besides webgui, or only plug ins16:28
+bartjolno16:28
carograymmmm16:28
+bartjolbut the stuffs which seems to make it is16:28
SDuensinMorning.16:28
+bartjolmorning Scott16:29
carograyso if it were just a file, like a jpg, or pdf - is xml that kind of file?16:29
+bartjolmore html like, but just a file anyways, so yes16:30
carograyI will need to find out more about this - thanks.16:30
+bartjolyeah, but you can upload files and make them group acessible16:31
carograyyou mean View by "everyone"?16:31
+bartjolcan't you use a dataform16:31
carograydata form is just a form, this is a really neat little application with audio and sometimes even video where an avatar asks you questions and takes you down the path to justice...16:32
+bartjoldepends on who you want able to see:16:32
+bartjola the form16:32
+bartjolb the results16:32
carograyneither16:32
carograyit uses flash16:32
+bartjolaah16:32
+bartjolalmost like a game16:32
carograyyes, I guess probably, maybe16:32
carograybut I have been told it is just an xml file16:33
+bartjolin wwhich I prolly will get stuck in prison 23 lifetimes16:33
+bartjolwell, but the results of choices can be quite simple16:34
+bartjolI can see that16:34
carograynot that kind of info - we only do civil law, so you would be evicted 23 million times, or divorced 23 million times, or have to pay 23 million in child support16:34
+bartjolah, the joys of justice16:34
carograyif I programmed it wrong.16:34
+bartjol:)16:34
carograyok...gotta go learn more about this..ta16:34

elninoisn't there a setting somewhere that the urls do not use the uploads directory? or something....?06:33
@preactionenableStreamingUploads maybe?06:34
@preactionbad idea, btw06:34
elninoI know.. I just need to scrape the site, and make it html, and right now, I'm getting a gabillian directorys in the uploads subdirectory. 06:35
elninothen the site comes down.06:35
@preactionwhy scrape? why not export?06:35
elninobecause the export didn't work as I thought it would.06:35
elninoIt did weird things.06:36
@preactionwhat kind of weird things?06:36
elninoI knew you were going to ask... 06:36
elninolol06:36
elninoI don't remember. I just remember it definately ddint' give me what I thought it would do.  sorry.06:36
elninothese people want to have the site all static html06:36
elninoand scraping was the only thing that I knew what to do06:37
elninoto give me a directory of files that would simply unzip nicely.06:37
elninoI think the export was missing images, and didn't export everything. or something.06:37
elninoI can try it again if you want. it won't take long, it's a small site.06:38
@preactioni believe there are options in the export for uploads directory thing06:38
@preactionbut i don't remember06:38
elninolet me finish this first though. 06:38
elninook. I'll look.06:38
@preactionand you're right, it's really only useful to those who already know what to do06:38
elninohmm. the enableStreamingUploads doesn't work in the gallery?06:43
elninoI restarted modperl and modproxy.  am I supposed to do spectre too?06:43
@preactionah, no, it doesn't work in the Gallery06:44
elninoga!!06:44

elnino =)06:44
@preactionbecause the photo's URL does not bring you to the photo06:44
@preactionneither06:44
@preactionit never will06:44
@preactionthe photo's URL is for the page with the photo's details06:44
@preactionenableStreamingUploads is for File and Image assets06:45
elninoalright, I guess I'll adjust the gallery template.  thanks06:45
elninoTHEN I'll do the export thingy06:45
elnino=)06:45
@preactionuh... adjust it to do what?06:46
elninonot link to the real photo.06:46
elninoI'll just make the thumbnail bigger.  =)06:46
elninoor 06:46
elninoI suppose that's in the uplaods too.06:46
@preactionyep06:46
elninowell, I'll cut the number down in half then. =)06:47
@preactionwhat's wrong with the uploads urls?06:47
@preactionsymlink uploads <- that's the property in the export i think06:47
@preactionI think all you need to do is: tar zcf mysite.tar.gz ExportDir /data/domains/.../uploads /data/WebGUI/extras <- 06:48
@preactionwait, that won't work right, but you get the idea: you need to include the uploads dir in the tarball06:48
@preactionand extras for that matter06:48
elninonothings wrong with it, its just overwhelming to see the large directory, and if they decide to moify the html themselves, they won't know where to go.06:48
elninooh.  yeah, that's what I did too for the exporting, but at this moment, I'm still scraping.06:49
elninoOH.  I see. I'm slow.06:54
elninouploads directory will have to be acceptable. 06:55
elninook. so I'll try to export it for you.06:56
elninohmm. 07:04
elninoso.. I exported it. using the symlink option.07:05
elninohold on. 07:07

elninoand home and all descendents are exportable.07:18
@preactionif you're at home, it won't get the import node07:18
@preactionif your stylesheets or sifr files are in the import node, they won't get exported07:18
elninoI figured it traversed the html07:18
elninobut that would explain why it's fast. 07:18
elninoit doesnt. =)07:18
@preactionnope, i want the "Template Attachments" thing to be able to do the right thing, but it hasn't been developed yet07:18
@preactionperlDreamer: could you do me a solid and test the code editor in the latest commit? make sure it works and make sure you can paste large blocks of text in IE7? i can't seem to reproduce the last bug07:19
elninok. I'll try this again. the other thing is that if I have to tarball the entire uploads, I get old revisions, which I don't need.  is there a way to "delete" all old revisions?07:20
@preactionthat would be a good RFE: export only the necessary parts of the uploads directory07:20
@preactiona better RFE: make new storage locations only when necessary, and delete only when no links to them exist07:21
elninowell , there is a wrokflow that deletes them once in a while. 07:21
@preactionan even better RFE: Rewrite all of WebGUI to do exactly what I want it to do, which is the RIGHT THING07:21
elninoI=me or I = you?07:22
@preactionyeah, but you don't want to modify that workflow to delete them all, and that would be the only way07:22
elnino=)07:22

@preactionyep07:24
elninolol .   I'll scrape.07:24
@preactionthe US Embassys (who funded the export stuff) tend to keep all their necessary stuff in a special folder in root07:25
@preactionyou can also cherry pick each folder you need to export07:25
@preaction(it doesn't have to be exported all at once)07:25
elninotoo much work.  =)07:27
elninoI got what I need.  =)  I'm going to bed early now... have a good night! nice chatting.07:27
elninohmmm. I find this interesting. my scrape included a bunch of YUI and tinymce files. I wonder if it knew I was still logged in.  maby I should do the wget insead.07:37
elninosince I'm up. Has there been discussion about chaning webgui's name by anychance?07:37
@preactionnot recently, why?07:38
elninowell. I have a google alert thing going, and all I get is hits on Visual WebGUi and not plainblack's webgui. very frustrating. I suspect it makes pb's marketing efforts difficult.07:39
@preactioni imagine it does, but there's been no talk that i know of07:41
@preactionJT's got some personal projects going, but that's about it07:41
elninoit's a drastic change. obviously not one to take lightly.07:41

@preactionwell, considering i want to drastically change the internals of WebGUI, it would make sense to use the time to change the name07:42

ckotilim currently doing this. and if a user goes to domain2.com that's all they will see.22:31
ckotilnow, depending on how you organize your site, domain1.com/domain2 will go to the same place as domain2.com/domain2 22:32

@preactioni think in 7.9 we should change the default configuration of the Rich Text Editors to be better: Add the Paste From Word button, use Inline Popups, Allow Media by default, and maybe more23:00
elninoYES23:00
@preactionooh, the cut/copy/paste/paste as plain text/undo/redo would be nice23:00
elninoYES23:00
elninomy client LOVES pasting from msword, its unbelieveably messy23:00
ckotiladd file assets from within the rich editor23:00
@preactioni'd do it right now, but people might get pissed off23:00
@preactionckotil: that would require code, not just clicking checkboxes in the rich editor's configuration23:01
elninodidn't know it did that.23:01
ckotil:0 i had to try23:01
@preactiongo to content_managers_rich_edit?func=edit <- on your site23:01
elninohow is that different than attachments? ckotil23:01
@preactionelnino: attachments can't be placed, and are not assets23:01
@preactionthe attachment / file asset system on webgui sucks for content management23:01
elninooh I see. =)23:02
elninoyes.23:02
ckotilwith assets you get version tracking, a reusable URL, and a lot more benefits23:02
@preactioni'm writing a lengthy reply to a user about this exact topic23:02
ckotilpreaction: i think its me :)23:02
@preactionprobably23:02
elninobrb23:02
ckotilmy users have been grilling me with questions, and some of them I cannot faithfully answer. bc my understanding of webgui is limited.23:03
@preactionno worries, i understand. and i share your pain23:03
@preactioni tried to start a blog a few months back, using webgui, and i was quickly frustrated at how impossibly difficult basic content management really is in webgui23:04
ckotilyeah, its a beast, and hyou really need to understand a majority of the system before you can really use it.23:05
@preactionyeah23:05
ckotilunfortunately my users are only using a small portion of it, so they have no desire to actually learn it23:05
@preactionsome people say the barrier to install is the biggest hurdle webgui faces. i say the convoluted way to perform basic, everyday tasks is23:05
ckotilive managed to make a lot of the tasks simpler. by leveragine the template system. ive added urls to add article/layouts/files. hover help boxes, little things like that.23:06
ckotilbut i ive still failed. need to go back and rethink some things.23:06
ckotiltho the doc system does have a lot of content. which is inspiring. people are using the system.23:07
@preactionyou could leverage some JS to make adding images to articles/pages a lot easier. 23:07
@preactionthough you might have to hack the button in (or make your users use a bookmarklet)23:08
ckotiluse JS to inline adding file assets to the article/layouts?23:08
@preactionessentially, and then the files can be in whatever place you want, but still be included as a macro in the currently-open rich editor23:09
@preactionwe want to move from TinyMCE to YUI's Editor, as it is easier to write these kinds of plugins and it's fewer dependencies, but we just haven't done the work yet23:09
@preactiononce we do, i want to completely overhaul the attachment system, and actually use the "Media" folder for something: attachments as assets under the Media/Attachments/<assetId> folder23:10
@preactionthen a tab next to the rich editor to show "Attachments for this asset" or "Search all attachments for all assets"23:10
ckotilwhy not ditch attachments all together and just have them as file assets?23:11
@preactionor just even "Search" to search for whatever kind of Image / File you want23:11
@preactionthey will be file assets, they'll just be called attachments (attachments being a user-friendly label)23:11
ckotilin our environment we keep all file assets in a specific location for each website. the file-bin23:11
@preactionto the user, it will seem that when they open a rich editor to edit an asset, a list of attachments to that asset appears23:12
ckotilok sure. that makes sense. asset this and that can be confusing23:12
@preactionto the admin, all attachments are in /media/attachments, organized by the asset ID of the asset it's attached to23:12
ckotilwould they also exist as children beneath the article/layout asset?23:13
elninothe template redos have definately helped. but they need docs which I'm working on.23:13
@preactionunfortunately, as i'll say in a little while, i don't have my own private time to do all this, and nobody's buying my time for me to do all this23:13
ckotilright.23:13
@preactionckotil: no, they wouldn't. that causes problems in navigation and they'd show up twice on the page if you also added them using the ^FileURL macro23:13
@preactionelnino: now we just need to get people thinking "Template Toolkit" instead of HTML::Template23:14
ckotilah.23:14
ckotili need to switch to the TT23:14
elninockotil  re attachments vs file assets.23:14
ckotilpreaction: re: content_managers_rich_edit.html?func=edit even though I have enabled Past from Word, it still doesnt work as well as it should.23:15
ckotilpretty sure its a tiny mce bug. 23:15
elninooh nevermind ckotil23:15
elninoI was going to say something. but am not going to.23:16
@preactionpost it, along with which version of webgui you're using. if you can verify it is indeed a tinymce bug, that would help a lot23:16
elninostill catching up on reading all of this.23:16
@preaction(the tinymce website should have a latest version demo you can try)23:16
ckotilk. problem is my users claim to haev all these problems but NEVER file a formal bug report with us23:16
ckotilonly last week finally squelched the MIME type issue with docx pptx etc... 23:17
ckotilwhich ive been hearinf about for 6 months.23:17
elninopreaction - the new "attachments"/file assets will still be attached to the articles, so that if a user views the article directly by url, they'll still see the attachments, right?23:17
@preactionmost people don't like asking for help, especially on something like computers (and especially from people who they know are smarter than them on the topic)23:17
@preactionelnino: it's not something i've thought about that much, but i want it to work more like the wiki attachments, where you drag/drop the attachments to the place you want them. most likely there would still also be the <tmpl_loop attachments> for the template people23:18
ckotilyah, that's too bad, when I really want to make the system work better23:18
@preactionlikewise, many of these trivial UI problems we have I never hear about because they aren't "bugs" per-se23:19
elninois the wiki attachments an aspect?23:19
@preactioni did some training runs last year, and that's when i really got a lot of feedback on how much we could improve our basics23:19
@preactionelnino: it's a form control, kinda. it's very hacky (due to the tinymce mostly)23:19
elninooh yea, I remember that.. It's very clunky. I never use it.23:20
@preactionexactly23:21
@preactionEXACTLY! ;-)23:21
elninoi think it was a templating issue whenI tried it.- when the wiki first came out.23:21

+perlDreamerHaarg: what do you think about using Moose delegation to handle Keywords?19:59
@Haargseems reasonable20:01

+perlDreamerrather, $asset->getKeywordsForAsset20:02

+perlDreamerbut the instanciator is a problem20:11
@preactionwhich instantiator?20:12
+perlDreamerthe one that the delegator should build for WebGUI::Keyword20:13
@preactionhas 'keywords' => ( default => sub { WebGUI::Keyword->new( $_[0]->session, $_[0]->getId ); }, lazy => 1 );20:13
+perlDreamerthat looks like it's been pasted from WebGUIX :)20:14
@preactionit hasn't. WebGUIx would be: __PACKAGE__->has_many( "keywords", "WebGUIx::Asset::Keyword" );20:15
@preaction(DBIC)20:15
+perlDreamerI'll see how that works with the delegation stuff20:18
+perlDreamerpreaction, did you also alter Keywords so that it would take an optional asset in the instanciator?20:23
@preactionno20:24
@preactionbut since I hate the keywords API we have, i'm going to end up rewriting it20:24
+perlDreamerI would suggest using hash based args, instead of hashrefs20:24
+perlDreamersince Moose delegation and currying won't handle stuffing hashrefs, from what I'm seeing20:25
@preactionno, but also the method names are horrible, you should use the delegation to fix that probably20:25
+perlDreameragain, I can't, since I can't curry in the asset argument to those horribly named methods20:26

+perlDreamerI pasted in <a href="http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu">Home</a>01:51
+perlDreamerand it underlined everything from http:// all the way to the end of the closing anchor tag01:51
+perlDreamerI'll take some screenshots and paste them up somewhere.01:54
@preactioni see that too, when i paste using the menu instead of Ctrl+V01:55
@preactionit's the _fixNodes method in simpleeditor01:59
@preactionbefore the yui editor does anything to the text, we need to escape the HTML, agreed?02:00
@preactionnope, nm, not _fixNodes02:07
@preactionit's _nodeChange, or something called by it02:15

+perlDreamerpreaction: that first link was interesting, this one is the answer http://yuilibrary.com/projects/yui2/ticket/252854802:47
+perlDreamerdav: "        Setting to future, pasting into the Editor is not supported.      "02:48
+perlDreamerif it works at all, it must be accidental02:48
@preaction"pasting into the Editor is not supported."02:48
@preactionfuck02:48
@preactionbut yes, that is the problem02:49
@preactioni'll mark it waiting on external, then i'll see about fixing the bug in YUI. this is not an acceptable bug...02:49
+perlDreamerthat bug is about pasting from the Editor into the Editor, but still, this is close enough02:50
@preactionso we are where we started really, there's still a bug that needs fixing, it just won't prevent us from going stable...02:50
@preactionoh, this might not be the same problem02:51
@preactionat least, that problem is easy to fix02:51
+perlDreamerI don't see any show stopper bugs on the list now.02:56

@preactioni'm thinking now that it's actually IE doing this03:10
@preactionwhen it inserts HTML elements, they're upper-case03:10
+perlDreamerI opened up a bug for it on their site: http://yuilibrary.com/projects/yui2/ticket/252878903:11
-!- fokat [~lem@200.84.244.194] has joined #webgui03:13
+perlDreamerall the HTML elements I"m seeing on IE7 are still lower case03:15
@preactionyou have to get the HTML before the highlighter gets to it03:15
@preactionlet me start up a logging instance, i've been doing alert() bs, and IE doesn't let you copy/paste from alerts03:15
+perlDreamerbut we wrote the highlighter03:15
+perlDreamerthat shouldn't be a problem at all03:16
@preactioni'll paste what IE does to the html. turning it back into text right away actually works, but highlighting what it does to the html doesn't work03:17
+perlDreamermaybe the SimpleEditor is not the right "tool" to build this on top of03:18
+perlDreamerbut I'm not about to suggest that to Dav ;)03:18
@preactioneh, i think the editor needs a ground-up rewrite to be honest03:19
+perlDreamerGooey makes a very good cable management tool03:21
@preactionhttp://gist.github.com/301096 <- this is what IE did03:27
+perlDreameryes, although you can duplicate the bug with the smaller snippet: <a href="http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/">Home</a>03:30
@preactionyes, and even smaller. i think it's the www., or http://, or something.something.{com|net|org|edu|gov}03:30
@preactionif it can be detected, it can be worked around03:31
@preactionoh, duh. if the highlighted text contains an <A ... /A>...03:32
+perlDreamermaybe, if we had a way to turn off the Editor and turn it back into a text area, then it would safe to paste?03:32
@preactionbut why? i mean, i'm going to add one anyway, but why do it just to work around a bug?03:34
@preactionright now we just remove the actual tags, leaving the content between the tags03:34
+perlDreamerbecause in the short term, I think it would be the workaround for ALL bugs03:34
@preactionproblem here: IE is adding a full <A> CONTENT </A> tag03:34
+perlDreamerjust turn it off03:34
@preactionwhat other bugs are there?03:35
+perlDreamerturning off the editor would have addressed the focus bug03:35
+perlDreamerI don't think we've used the Code Editor enough to really shake it out yet03:35
@preactionoh, that focus bug03:36
@preactionif we give users a workaround, they'll always use it, but worse: They'll never report the problems03:37
+perlDreamertrue03:37
@preactionit's incredible to me, but apparently people don't like reporting problems03:37
+perlDreamerit's just laziness03:37
@preactionanyway, imma post a diff, could you verify?03:37
+perlDreameryeah03:38
@preactionhttp://gist.github.com/30111003:38
@preactionnm, doesn't work. works for the small one, but not the big example03:40
+perlDreamerit's a start03:41
@preactionit's because for some reason the ">Home is put into the URL unescaped...03:42
@preactionyou know, this wouldn't be so difficult if IE actually added VALID HTML FOR GOD'S SAKE03:45
@preaction&lt;a href="<A href='http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/">Home</a></div'>http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/"&gt;Home&lt;/a&gt; <- i need to change that to &lt;a href="<A href='http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/">Home</a></div'>http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/"&gt;Home&lt;/a&gt;03:47
@preactionhref=(['"]).*?\1 <- would do it in Perl, but can't seem to do it in JS03:48
@preactionoh, wait, right, before that i can't do that (it will nest "", thus creating completely broken HTML no matter what)03:48
+perlDreamerit wants to become 03:51
+perlDreamer&lt;a href="<A href='http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/'>http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/"&gt;Home&lt;/a&gt;03:51
+perlDreameruh, getting closer03:52
+perlDreamer&lt;a href="<A href='http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/'>http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/</A>"&gt;Home&lt;/a&gt;03:52
@preactionso what i want is <A .+? >anything</A>03:56
+perlDreamersingle quotes work fine in the short snippet03:58
* perlDreamer takes a dinner break03:59
@preaction... i'm going to have to actually parse this...04:00
@preactionthat's the real problem: i'm parsing HTML with regular expressions04:01

+perlDreamerboth the small snippet and long snippet work04:33
