qwebirc44982 | Hello. I want to make my website responsive and YUI framework isn't, can you recommend a responsive framework? | 19:33 |
* scrottie scratches his head | 20:24
@scrottie | HTML 1 is pretty responsive when paired with a threaded server such as Seaside or Continuity. it *screams*. | 20:25 |
sbaur | i think he's talking about "responsive design" like has been discussed on the http://www.webgui.org/forums/design/any-experience-modifying-styles-included-webgui-to-be-html-5-and-responsive-/ | 20:27 |
sbaur | and here http://www.webgui.org/forums/design/responsive-design | 20:27 |
@scrottie | overnight, everyone decided to overload the meaning of a word, it looks like. | 20:36 |
@scrottie | so "responsive" has something to do with mobile devices, but I'm still not clear what after reading this. it takes about different sized thumbnails. | 20:36 |
@scrottie | and something about content flowing correctly when zoomed in or on a small screen | 20:38 |

gry | Hi | 08:50 |
gry | What are the available options to install webGUI on nginx + debian please? | 08:52 |
@scrottie | wG8 is designed to work with nginx | 09:01 |
@scrottie | though of course you could put nginx in front of wG7 | 09:01 |
@scrottie | I have an installer for wG8 on Debian, but everyone is using wG7. if you want to run 7 but with nginx in front of it, look at the "source install" instructions on webgui.org. | 09:02 |
gry | would you mind sharing wG8 .deb file perhaps? it looks easiest | 09:02 |
@scrottie | actually, now that you mention it, there is a wG7 .deb | 09:03 |
@scrottie | apt-cache search webgui | 09:03 |
@scrottie | webgui - Content management platform to maintain complex web sites | 09:03 |
gry | what does `cat /etc/*release*` tell you? | 09:04 |
@scrottie | there is no .deb for wG8, just an installer script that knows how to install the deps with apt and then set everything up. | 09:04 |
@scrottie | cat: /etc/*release: No such file or directory | 09:04 |
@scrottie | cat /etc/debian_version ... wheezy/sid | 09:04 |
gry | lsb_release -a | 09:04 |
gry | ah | 09:04 |
@scrottie | No LSB modules are available. | 09:05 |
gry | '/etc/debian_version' says 6.0.6 for me, and I don't see webgui in apt repos | 09:05 |
@scrottie | Distributor ID: Debian Description: Debian GNU/Linux unstable (sid) Release: unstable Codename: sid | 09:05 |
@scrottie | I'm not much of a Debian head. sorry. I don't know what version number wheezy/sid is. | 09:06 |
gry | I think this means that I'm on the stable version, and you're on the unstable one; I'll try to get the .deb file and install anyway | 09:06 |
@scrottie | that's one strategy. | 09:06 |
@scrottie | it installs some doc files in /usr/share | 09:07 |
@scrottie | there are things you have to do before wG starts. details about that are in there. | 09:07 |
@scrottie | I read the instructions once but don't remember what they say, but a lot of people stumble in here for help because they didn't know to read that | 09:07 |
@scrottie | http://gist.github.com/2973558 is my experimental installer for wG8. and again, no one runs 8. | 09:08 |
gry | I'm happy to test beta software, but I'd rather attempt installing and running stable version for a little bit first | 09:09 |
@scrottie | understood. | 09:09 |
@scrottie | apt-cache showpkg webgui output: http://pastie.org/6148542 | 09:10 |
gry | hah, it's translated. nice. didn't know that | 09:11 |
@scrottie | =) | 09:11 |
@scrottie | that's one area where volunteers have really kicked butt. | 09:11 |
gry | oh they don't like perl? ;) | 09:11 |
* gry grins | 09:11 | |
@scrottie | yeah, not much i18n perl out there. | 09:12 |
gry | hm. the deb depends on apache2 doesn't it? | 09:17 |
@scrottie | yup. | 09:17 |
gry | ok, I'll have to attempt source install then | 09:18 |
gry | http://www.webgui.org/download/source links to http://www.webgui.org/community-wiki/source-install which is 404? | 09:18 |
@scrottie | http://www.webgui.org/wiki/source-install should be right. | 09:20 |
@scrottie | thanks for the 404 report. | 09:20 |
@scrottie | I don't think anyone is working on the site right now though =| | 09:20 |
gry | hrm, it says I'll "need" apache; I'll ignore that and keep reading | 09:21 |
@scrottie | sorry, man. | 09:21 |
@scrottie | wG7 is a mod_perl app. | 09:21 |
@scrottie | wG8 is Plack. | 09:21 |
@scrottie | there are faked up mod_perl environments out there that may or may not work. | 09:22 |
gry | ah, ok. I should try wG8 then | 09:22 |
@scrottie | er, faked up in the sense that they aren't actually Apache mod_perl. | 09:22 |
@scrottie | so Apache is a show stopper. I'm certainly not fond of it myself. | 09:23 |
@scrottie | preaction (Doug) did wG8's admin interface, which was a re-do from 7's. he decided to use frames. | 09:23 |
@scrottie | I should fix that one of these days. | 09:23 |
@scrottie | right now, it's pretty easy to get a frameset of two frames inside of a frame of the outter frameset. | 09:24 |
gry | I'll follow the instructions in http://gist.github.com/2973558 then I guess? is that the best way to install wG8 on debian stable? | 09:24 |
@scrottie | if it works, it's the best way. if it doesn't... uh, bug reports welcome! | 09:24 |
@scrottie | there's also a "WRE" package (WebGUI runtime environment) that bundles up all of the deps as binaries built with a non-standard --prefix | 09:26 |
@scrottie | that still has a lot of steps in the install, and the docs aren't good. | 09:26 |
@scrottie | I have better docs I've been meaning to merge in laying around here somewhere, but they might have bugs still, and there are a lot of steps to that route. | 09:27 |
@scrottie | if the installer works, it should be a matter of answering some questions and then the thing is up. | 09:27 |
gry | install directory is in webserver directory, right? | 09:27 |
@scrottie | long term goal is to make wG into CPAN modules. | 09:27 |
@scrottie | doesn't matter. Plack is a webserver and so is nginx, and they both get configured with what you give it there. | 09:28 |
gry | can plack apps talk to nginx somehow so I don't end up with two deamons running? | 09:28 |
@scrottie | the installer was designed for systems that don't already have something on port 80. if you do, then nginx won't start (wG should start still). | 09:28 |
@scrottie | but you can fix that. | 09:29 |
@scrottie | the idea with nginx is to have multiple daemons running. | 09:29 |
@scrottie | nginx is mostly just a proxy. | 09:29 |
gry | in other words, does wG8 work if I uninstall nginx? | 09:29 |
@scrottie | you don't need nginx, strinctly speaking, but it does offload serving static files from plack/perl. | 09:29 |
@scrottie | nginx is fast. perl, not so much. | 09:29 |
gry | ah | 09:29 |
gry | ok, so I can set any install directory I like then, they'll configure itself to talk to eachother | 09:30 |
@scrottie | yup. at least that's the intent. | 09:30 |
gry | i kind of wonder what percona server it, it sounds odd | 09:32 |
@scrottie | it's a fork of MySQL | 09:33 |
gry | ah | 09:33 |
@scrottie | Oracle bought MySQL and then started bullying the community, commiting really unstable code (even for MySQL standards), and generally breaking things. | 09:33 |
gry | how do I know my mysql password then? it's the first time I'm being asked (it asked for a 'mysql' password even though installed percona) | 09:34 |
@scrottie | Percona installs mysqld, safe_mysqld, mysql, etc. the installer itself doesn't even know which one you have. | 09:34 |
@scrottie | it could try to find out, but there wouldn't be much point. | 09:35 |
gry | ok. how do I find out my current root password with that? | 09:35 |
@scrottie | umm... when you install percona or mysql on Debian, Debian makes you pick a root password. | 09:35 |
gry | ah, I forgot that. it works | 09:35 |
@scrottie | there's a trick for resetting it if it's lost. | 09:35 |
gry | preaction is in #perl, but surprisingly isn't here :) | 09:36 |
@scrottie | the installer does attempt to get 'root' in without a password and then have you set it, so if it's asking for the password, there is one. | 09:36 |
@scrottie | not so surprisingly. he stopped working here some time ago. actually, so did most of the people in here who were staff at one point. | 09:37 |
@scrottie | haarg is very helpful and hasn't worked at PlainBlack in quite a while now. | 09:37 |
haarg | oh hey it's my name | 09:38 |
@scrottie | hi haarg =) | 09:38 |
@scrottie | how's snowpocalypse II? | 09:38 |
haarg | well, it actually snowed this year | 09:38 |
haarg | so that's something | 09:38 |
haarg | nothing that accounts for much around here though | 09:39 |
@scrottie | hrm. | 09:39 |
gry | I'll leave for an hour or so and continue instalation when I'm back | 09:40 |

@scrottie | hi gry | 07:06 |
@scrottie | thought that might have been danny_mk, working late | 07:06 |

@scrottie | configuration file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf test failed | 07:07 |
gry | yea | 07:27 |
gry | i have no idea how to work around that | 07:27 |
gry | it says that it asks nginx to test the files using -t switch, and apparently nginx thinks that the directive is duplicate | 07:28 |
gry | i just commented both gzip things in nginx conf, waiting for installer to process that | 07:32 |
gry | scrottie: you should have one more mail about the last error i got -- templating out config files, couldn't open output file /etc/rc.d/init.d/webgui8XXXX: No such file or directory | 07:34 |

@scrottie | which Debian is that again? | 08:18 |

@scrottie | template(services_debian(), "/etc/rc.d/init.d/webgui8XXXX", { } ) # XXXXXXXX doesn't exist yet and certainly isn't tested | 08:20 |
@scrottie | that's a lot of X's. | 08:20 |
@scrottie | I stubbed a service startup rc script for Debian after doing one for CentOS, but never finished it, and committed the unfinished work | 08:21 |
gry | hmm | 08:22 |
@scrottie | commented that out and pushed | 08:22 |
gry | pushed to ..gist? | 08:22 |
@scrottie | 93f4cf8 might work for you now | 08:22 |
@scrottie | yup | 08:22 |
gry | hah, that's a nice feature | 08:22 |
@scrottie | wget https://raw.github.com/gist/2973558/webgui_installer.pl --no-check-certificate | 08:22 |
@scrottie | that should fetch the latest copy | 08:22 |
@scrottie | gists are little git repos =) | 08:22 |
@scrottie | I have a pile of stuff in those things. | 08:23 |
@scrottie | took out the 'gzip on' directive, too, since I now know that nginx sometimes comes with a config file with that on. | 08:28 |
@scrottie | it's odd that nginx throws a fatal error if it sees the same directive twice even when they both have the same value (eg, on) | 08:28 |
@scrottie | then sub-config files dependon the main one in a bizarre sort of way | 08:29 |
gry | it completed install now (although thte 'plackup --port 8081 app.psgi &' spams console a lot) | 08:31 |
@scrottie | sounds right. | 08:31 |
gry | clicked 'turn admin on', a lot of 404s on images/css, think something's going wrong | 08:36 |
@scrottie | hrm. | 08:36 |
gry | i typed not a real hostname when installer prompted me, so i'll re-try and see if it helps | 08:37 |
gry | t should probably learn to delete a mysql table if it exists (i had a lot of tries and ended up typing fake domain names) | 08:37 |
@scrottie | mysql --user=root --password <database name here> | 08:37 |
@scrottie | drop database <whatever>; | 08:38 |
@scrottie | if you told it the domain was www.foo.com, the database name would be www_foo_com | 08:38 |
@scrottie | you can also do 'show databases;' to see which exist | 08:38 |
@scrottie | it creates a database for each domain, each full of a bunch of tables | 08:38 |
@scrottie | I don't think that that's the problem, though. links should all be relative. | 08:42 |
@scrottie | if you hit localhost:8080 and it pulls up the main page, then it should be fine. | 08:43 |
@scrottie | or whatever port. I forget. | 08:43 |
@scrottie | more likely, | 08:43 |
@scrottie | 'turn on admin' is busted. | 08:43 |
@scrottie | have an exact example broken link? | 08:43 |
@scrottie | er, if localhost:8081 works but localhost:80 doesn't, then plack is configured incorrectly. | 08:44 |
gry | i'll give more detail if entering real domain name doesn't help; give me a few minutes | 08:44 |
@scrottie | sure | 08:44 |
gry | yes it was okay on :8081, i just clicked turn admin on and it broke @ http://foo:8081/your_next_step?op=admin | 08:45 |
gry | ... where foo is my domain | 08:45 |
@scrottie | works here. hmm. | 08:47 |
@scrottie | URLs look like /extras/assets/small/subscription.gif H | 08:48 |
gry | ha | 08:48 |
@scrottie | /crystalx/crystalx.css ... that's an asset (in the database, not in a file) | 08:49 |
gry | hmm, it tries to connect to 'gry7' now (this is one of the fake domain names i entered earlier), where do i set it to not do that? | 08:49 |
@scrottie | all static files should start with '/extras/' | 08:49 |
gry | https://pastee.org/sbzgq | 08:49 |
@scrottie | sitename in the .conf file in etc/ | 08:51 |
@scrottie | there's a log.conf and a spectre.conf, but not those... the one named after the domain... www.example.com.conf, for example | 08:51 |
gry | ? which file? | 08:51 |
gry | hmm | 08:52 |
@scrottie | wG is set up to host multiple domains on one install. that happens if there are multiple config files. | 08:52 |
@scrottie | you'll have to restart it after editing that. it's JSON. | 08:52 |
@scrottie | re: https://pastee.org/sbzgq, it can't connect to the database | 08:54 |
@scrottie | you shouldn't have gotten anything out of it | 08:54 |
@scrottie | shouldn't have seen a 'turn admin on' link to click | 08:54 |
@scrottie | if the installer set up the 'webgui' mysql user and the WebGUI config file (etc/www.example.com.conf), it botched it. | 08:55 |
gry | please see https://pastee.org/bk3nn | 08:55 |
gry | yes i have this 'cant connect' after a re-install, it had the turn admin on link before | 08:56 |
@scrottie | okay. hmm. | 08:56 |
gry | root@localhost:/data# grep -R gry7 * | 08:57 |
gry | root@localhost:/data# | 08:57 |
gry | ouch sorry | 08:58 |
gry | the installer didn' kill previous running instance | 08:58 |
@scrottie | okay. it connected to mysql as root and reset the webgui database user's password. but the config file *should* match. | 08:58 |
gry | i did that and it showed up now | 08:58 |
@scrottie | ah, okay. makes sense. | 08:58 |
gry | checking for the turn-admin-on stuff now | 08:59 |

gry | yes, /extras/yui/build/autocomplete/assets/skins/sam/autocomplete.css | 09:01 |
@scrottie | okay, that file should exist. | 09:02 |
gry | restarting nginx didn't 'fix' those | 09:02 |

gry | So it didn't :) | 09:04 |
@scrottie | didn't copy stuff over. okay. | 09:04 |
@scrottie | would you please edit your .conf file in etc and change the "extrasPath" entry to instead read: "/data/WebGUI/www/extras", restart wG, and tell me if "turn admin on" looks okay after that? | 09:08 |
@scrottie | I'm wondering if I can get away with skipping copying stuff into /data/domains/whatever.com/public/extras. right now, wG and nginx don't match. wG wants a copy, nginx should be looking at the copy that comes with the git checkout of wG. | 09:09 |
gry | Yes, looks ok now | 09:10 |
@scrottie | fix #3 then... | 09:11 |
@scrottie | still, from port :80, it should work, because nginx would be looking in the right place for static files | 09:12 |
@scrottie | (pushed up another version) | 09:13 |
gry | how do i edit 'yourname' thing in heading? | 09:17 |
@scrottie | uhmhm | 09:17 |
@scrottie | I'm really weak on the UI side. I spend almost all of my time on the API side. | 09:18 |
@scrottie | let me see. | 09:18 |
@scrottie | 'settings', probably. | 09:18 |
@scrottie | Admin Console -> Settings -> Company Name, probably | 09:19 |
gry | great | 09:21 |
gry | and how do i stop it from spaming console so it writes stuff to file instead? | 09:21 |
@scrottie | hrm. what spam are you seeing? access log stuff? | 09:23 |
gry | yes | 09:23 |
@scrottie | plack does that in development mode. let's see. | 09:23 |
gry | actually i think 'plackup --port 8081 app.psgi > allout.txt 2>&1 &' worked | 09:23 |
@scrottie | that too. | 09:24 |
@scrottie | perldoc plack says that it takes a value from -E on the command line, the PLACK_ENV environment variable, or ... no, just those. | 09:24 |
@scrottie | --access-log on the plackup command line lets you specify a file for access log stuff. | 09:25 |
gry | hm, i changed company name, still the same 'yourname' stuff at the top | 09:25 |
@scrottie | do you happen to know if you're using the "crystal" style? | 09:28 |
@scrottie | select * from settings where name = 'userFunctionStyleId'; | 09:29 |
gry | I'm using 'Underground User' style | 09:30 |
@scrottie | okay. if you do 'turn admin on', is there a little 'Edit' button near where it says "yourname"? | 09:31 |
gry | | userFunctionStyleId | zfDnOJgeiybz9vnmoEXRXA | | 09:31 |
@scrottie | up/right from it? | 09:31 |
gry | hmm | 09:31 |
@scrottie | <div id="logo">your<span class="red">name</span></div> | 09:31 |
@scrottie | lovely. it's hard-coded right in. | 09:32 |
gry | heh, yeah, and no 'edit' button | 09:32 |
* gry tries another style | 09:32
@scrottie | http://localhost:8081/style-underground/style-underground-user?func=edit | 09:32 |
@scrottie | that should get you there | 09:32 |
@scrottie | and it's pretty safe to ignore the warning. no upgrade script is going to change that style. | 09:33 |
@scrottie | or if it does, it'll just patch something. | 09:33 |
gry | okay | 09:33 |
gry | what do I type instead of <div id="logo">your<span class="red">name</span></div>? | 09:33 |
@scrottie | odd about the no edit link though. the idea is that everything has one. | 09:33 |
@scrottie | whatever you like... | 09:34 |
@scrottie | ^c; | 09:34 |
@scrottie | that's a macro that gives you whatever is set for your company name. | 09:34 |
@scrottie | or you could hard-code something else in. | 09:34 |
@scrottie | or take that out entirely. | 09:35 |
gry | great, i used this macro, and it works | 09:35 |
@scrottie | neat! | 09:35 |
@scrottie | could you send me a screenshot of the thing with 'turn admin on' and no edit button there? I'm curious to see this. | 09:35 |
@scrottie | I'm scott@slowass.net, if you don't want to use imgur or one of those. | 09:36 |
gry | http://i.imgur.com/flHe1wx.png | 09:36 |
@scrottie | you are fast. | 09:37 |
gry | yeah, a nice screenshot tool i have, it is fast ;) | 09:37 |
@scrottie | you stuck in "guppy" for the company name? I'm not familiar with what that style looks like | 09:37 |
@scrottie | hrm, come to think of it, I guess the style template itself wouldn't have an edit link there. | 09:38 |
@scrottie | that would be in Admin Console -> Settings -> UI -> User Function Style | 09:39 |
@scrottie | that has a drop down for selecting style and a link to edit whichever style is currently set | 09:39 |
@scrottie | since I suck at the UI, I just did, initially: select * from settings where name = 'userFunctionStyleId'; then: select template from template where assetId='zfDnOJgeiybz9vnmoEXRXA'; then: select url from assetData where assetId='zfDnOJgeiybz9vnmoEXRXA'; | 09:40 |
@scrottie | and that told me what URL to send you to to edit. | 09:40 |
gry | yes, i typed 'guppy' into company name field, so it showed up | 10:03 |
@scrottie | coool. | 10:03 |
gry | i would wonder how to customize sidebar layout at this point | 10:05 |
gry | webgui links section appears to be hardcoded | 10:06 |
gry | ... into the template | 10:06 |
* gry comments | 10:06 | |
@scrottie | that's pretty bad. | 10:07 |
@scrottie | I imagine most of those site styles need some work. | 10:07 |
gry | is there a macro for current year? | 10:08 |
gry | ... for the (c) YEAR line at the bottom | 10:08 |
@scrottie | heh | 10:08 |
@scrottie | well, since copyright rights extend from the date work was done (or the date a revision was created), that template is probably copyright 2008 or so. | 10:09 |
@scrottie | claiming the current year would be a little dishonest, considering the state of neglect. | 10:09 |
gry | i think it's a (c) line for entire site unless i am mistaken | 10:10 |
gry | ouch, i set 'help' style for admin console and it's now pretty much gone, how do i undo that? | 10:10 |
@scrottie | oh yeah. that would make more sense. | 10:10 |
@scrottie | heh | 10:11 |
@scrottie | hang on. | 10:11 |
@scrottie | hmm. | 10:12 |
@scrottie | try this: update settings set value='PBtmpl0000000000000001' where name='AdminConsoleTemplate'; | 10:13 |
@scrottie | and this: update settings set value='p8g7xlQaTeKSRRDo-_ejSQ' where name='templateIdAdmin'; | 10:14 |
gry | great, that worked :) | 10:15 |
@scrottie | yay! | 10:15 |
gry | I made a test domain, but links in sidebar are absolute: http://guppy.uk.to/ | 10:23 |
gry | Any way to sort that out? | 10:23 |
@scrottie | argh. | 10:28 |
@scrottie | wG7 didn't have that problem. | 10:28 |
@scrottie | preaction-- | 10:28 |
@scrottie | add an /etc/hosts entry? | 10:28 |
gry | which one? I've not used that file yet and I don't know how | 10:29 |
gry | Heh, doing a lot of things means doing a lot of mistakes too... :) | 10:30 |
@scrottie | it maps one or more hostnames to an IP address | 10:30 |
gry | Hmm. | 10:30 |
@scrottie | if you can make guppy.uk.to map to the IP of the server, it *should* serve those static files | 10:30 |
gry | It does. | 10:31 |
@scrottie | eg, I've this in my hosts file: 192.168.0.6 brotherprinter | 10:31 |
gry | I'm missing the idea. guppy.uk.to resolves to the ip of the server. ... what is a next step? | 10:32 |
@scrottie | I was talking to another fellow earlier today about redoing the admin. | 10:32 |
@scrottie | why is it a problem in this case (I know it's a problem in general) that the admin uses absolute links? | 10:33 |
gry | It's not just admin; it's the user-facing side of the website in the first place. | 10:33 |
gry | Hm, or maybe not. | 10:34 |
@scrottie | the hostname it's trying to use can be changed... | 10:34 |
@scrottie | does guppy.uk.to not resolve to that server? | 10:34 |
@scrottie | or did you want to change it later, or what? | 10:34 |
gry | I think the problem went away after I made a change to the domain: I also managed to forget password, and http://guppy.uk.to/home?op=auth;method=recoverPassword is empty | 10:35 |
@scrottie | perl -e 'use Digest::MD5; print Digest::MD5::md5_base64("123qwe");' | 10:35 |
@scrottie | update authentication set fieldData = '...whatever that spits out...' where userId = '3' and authMethod='WebGUI' and fieldName='identifier'; | 10:35 |
@scrottie | first at the shell prompt, second at the mysql> prompt | 10:36 |
@scrottie | that should reset admin's password to whatever | 10:36 |
@scrottie | and unsalted MD5 passwords are bad =( | 10:36 |
@scrottie | I gotta go to bed here. lots to do tomorrow... | 10:37 |
gry | good news, admin interface links aren't absolute :) | 10:37 |
gry | okay, sleep well :) | 10:37 |
@scrottie | hopefully everything is working for you at the moment! | 10:37 |
@scrottie | if so, don't break anything ;) | 10:38 |
@scrottie | by the way, dumping and undumping the database can be handy if you're experimenting and might break things | 10:38 |
@scrottie | there's a developer's tool for WebGUI called wgd | 10:38 |
@scrottie | http://haarg.org/wgd should give it to you. it has built in help. it lets you edit assets in $EDITOR, dump and undump easily, explore the asset tree, and lots of stuff. | 10:39 |
@scrottie | g'night! | 10:39 |
gry | :) | 10:40 |

@daviddelikat | hello | 14:48 |
@daviddelikat | what can I do for you gry? | 14:49 |
gry | https://pastee.org/zxmtx why does this only list current page + childs but not the entire tree? | 14:50 |
gry | it's a template navbar side thingy | 14:50 |
gry | ... of the 'underground user' template | 14:50 |
gry | daviddelikat: ^^^ | 14:53 |
gry | and how can I edit site layout? do I edit files? or is there an interface to do that? | 14:59 |
@daviddelikat | sorry, I was away | 15:00 |
@daviddelikat | looking now | 15:00 |
gry | I just want sidebar navigation to list entire tree | 15:00 |
gry | probably inactive sections collapsed, but it should be complete, not just current page + children | 15:00 |
@daviddelikat | the assets included in a nav asset is controlled by one of the nav asset attributes | 15:01 |
@daviddelikat | one sec, let me see what its called... | 15:01 |
gry | https://pastee.org/zxmtx why does this only list current page + childs but not the entire tree? | 15:02 |
gry | . | 15:02 |
@daviddelikat | check 'assets to include' | 15:02 |
gry | oops, mispaste | 15:02 |
gry | which menu item is it under? | 15:03 |
@daviddelikat | should be the first tab | 15:03 |
@daviddelikat | I think it is just under description | 15:03 |
gry | oh. it's the new content, utilities, navigation thing, riht? I thought it's a new page, not a thing to go to sidebar | 15:04 |
gry | it makes a new page, while I want to change the way sidebar behaves | 15:04 |
gry | ? | 15:08 |
@daviddelikat | can I have a link to the sight you are workingon? | 15:09 |
gry | daviddelikat: http://guppy.uk.to/ | 15:10 |
@daviddelikat | do I need to log in to see the problem you are having? | 15:11 |
gry | look at http://guppy.uk.to/get_involved and the left top of sidebar | 15:12 |
gry | you will see that it no longer has a link to welcome page | 15:13 |
gry | and the welcome page has no link to get involved page in the sidebar | 15:13 |
gry | ideally I would like it to say 'navigation: * item 1 * item 2 * item 3' etc with a list of pages | 15:13 |
gry | the active one would be bold | 15:14 |
@daviddelikat | what is the setting for 'assets to include' ? | 15:20 |
@daviddelikat | can you show me the lineage for the assets in quesstion? | 15:21 |
@daviddelikat | you can check the lineage of assets using the asset manager | 15:30 |
@daviddelikat | all assets listed when you 'manage' an asset are children of that asset | 15:31 |
@daviddelikat | then check what the start point is | 15:33 |
@daviddelikat | that will show you what to check to see what assets to include should be set in order to get the desired assets to show | 15:36 |
@daviddelikat | I will be out for a while but you can contact me later if you are still having trouble | 15:37 |

sbaur | im sure someone does, but it's not me :-) | 23:04 |
+danny_mk | Really would like to have a Drupal like admin interface instead of the new WebGUI8 interface | 23:04 |
@scrottie | let's do it. | 23:05 |
+danny_mk | That would be great | 23:05 |
@scrottie | hrmmm.. where to start. | 23:05 |
+danny_mk | selecting the right JS library | 23:06 |
+danny_mk | I vote for YUI3 | 23:06 |
@scrottie | don't you just want to use whatever Drupal already is? | 23:06 |
@scrottie | that would make "stealing" their admin UI a lot easier. | 23:06 |
+danny_mk | they use jquery | 23:07 |
@scrottie | then let's use that. | 23:07 |
+danny_mk | OK, fine with me | 23:07 |
@scrottie | WebGUI::Operation::Admin handles op=admin which gets passed when admin mode gets turned on | 23:08 |
+danny_mk | Now let me check how they setup their top menu, I hope they are not using iframe | 23:09 |
@scrottie | so that would be removed from the config file and replaced with WebGUI::Operation::DrupalAdmin or something | 23:09 |
@scrottie | or maybe that can stay. hmm. | 23:09 |
@scrottie | that just calles $session->switchAdminOn. ack can't find where that's defined. *sigh* | 23:11 |
+danny_mk | would that not tie the templates to the specific module? Would rather change a site->setting to DrupalLikeInterface... | 23:11 |
@scrottie | making them co-exist would be harder than a wholesale replacement | 23:12 |
+danny_mk | OK | 23:12 |
@scrottie | "do the simplest thing that might actually work"... then improve it. | 23:12 |
@scrottie | imo =) | 23:12 |

@scrottie | there's some Content Manager documentation on the site that might be helpful. and did you find the setting that delikat was talking about? | 23:18 |
@scrottie | there's a lot of dead code in this admin stuff | 23:22 |
gry | hi | 23:22 |
+danny_mk | are you talking to me or gry? | 23:22 |
+danny_mk | scrottie: are you talking to me or try? | 23:23 |

+danny_mk | darn autocorrect | 23:23 |
gry | i woke up and try to follow daviddelikat's advice about assets manager, i try clicking 'admin console -> assets' but this simply opens the website itself instead of an assets manager | 23:23 |
+danny_mk | gry: what version of WebGUI? | 23:23 |
gry | 8 | 23:23 |
* scrottie sighs | 23:24 | |
@scrottie | welcome to the "I hate the wG8 admin" club. | 23:24 |
+danny_mk | in view mode it does that, in tree mode you can see the assets | 23:24 |
+danny_mk | if you click on the tree tab do you see the assets? | 23:25 |
gry | scrottie: is the 0.9.3 admin any better? ;-) | 23:25 |
gry | hmm | 23:25 |
gry | where should assets be located in tree? 'Home' stuff is the pages, and I don't know what's the rest and where assets aer | 23:26 |
gry | are | 23:26 |
+danny_mk | what assets are you looking for? | 23:26 |
gry | 'import' stuff has 'navigation' in it | 23:26 |

+danny_mk | gry: That must be one of the settings in Root->Import->[Style] Underground->Navigation->Side Navigation | 23:32 |
+danny_mk | gry: Did you try changing the settings for Side Navigation? | 23:33 |
@scrottie | https://gist.github.com/scrottie/4956597 ... danny_mk, it seems like there are two basic strategies that could be used | 23:34 |
+danny_mk | OK, I am open for suggestions | 23:34 |
@scrottie | 1. remove Content::Admin from the config file and replace it with something else that is designed from the ground up to work with whatever parameters the Drupal UI passes, and to send back whatever JSON etc it expects | 23:35 |
@scrottie | 2. modify the Drupal UI to instead use parameters and datastructures that the current wG uses and generates | 23:35 |
@scrottie | #2 would almost certainly involve adding "admin plugins" to do attitional work, but that wouldn't be hard | 23:36 |
@scrottie | sure, go for it | 23:37 |
gry | http://i.imgur.com/DRWmijV.png why am I taken to this after I save the flex menu? I wouldn't want a link to 'home' there; this is not the template I'm using; and 'turn admin on!' link should be irrelevant as I already have the admin sidebar | 23:43 |
gry | oh, and the navigation is shown twice for some reason. | 23:44 |
gry | http://demo.webgui.org/demo1360878334_998/your_next_step<-- a demo; default username and password; I can't resolve the problem there | 23:48 |
gry | Admin '123qwe' | 23:49 |
gry | (I know it may be another version, but I still don't see how to resolve the issue) | 23:49 |
+danny_mk | gry: give me a few min | 23:49 |
+danny_mk | gry: OK, back | 23:55 |
gry | ok | 23:55 |
@scrottie | the page doesn't currently know whether the sidebar is there or not. | 23:56 |
@scrottie | in fact, you can keep turning admin on and getting another sidebar and another sidebar. | 23:57 |
@scrottie | iframes. | 23:57 |
gry | okay | 23:57 |
gry | would you mind looking at the demo please and trying to get the sidebar behave in it | 23:57 |
@scrottie | as far as 'Home' showing up in the list, the Nav asset might have a setting that lets you take that out. otherwise, the call to getLineage() in the Nav asset needs to have its arguments changed. | 23:58 |
@scrottie | get it to behave how? | 23:58 |
@scrottie | not have 'Home' in it? | 23:58 |
gry | so when I go to http://demo.webgui.org/demo1360878334_998/your_next_step it still has links to the other stuff http://demo.webgui.org/demo1360878334_998/ sidebar links to | 23:58 |
gry | to 'join us', 'documentation', etc | 23:59 |
@scrottie | I don't have your session cookie... I won't be able to see that | 23:59 |
@scrottie | wsait, I can | 23:59 |
gry | you can log in: Admin '123qwe' -- or I can fiddle with it and create a new username for you if this doesn't work | 23:59 |
@scrottie | what's wrong with "Join Us" etc? | 23:59 |
@scrottie | what are you trying to accomplish? | 23:59 |

@scrottie | okay... ? | 00:00 |

@scrottie | is there an 8 demo? or is that 7? | 07:38 |
@scrottie | generally, stuff works very, very well in 7 but not so much in 8. | 07:38 |
@scrottie | 8 was a huge modernization effort but it broke stuff. | 07:38 |
gry | scrottie: I think 'requests tracker' doesn't work in wG8, but there is a 'Collaboration System' with the same icon and it wors. I don't know whether it's the same thing (I think not). | 07:42 |
gry | s/wors/works/ | 07:43 |
@scrottie | not exactly the same thing. | 07:43 |
@scrottie | the Collaboration System kind of tries to do everything. it's a beast. | 07:43 |
gry | And I don't know where to get details of why 'Requests Tracker' thing doesn't show up at all (not even a create form). | 07:43 |
gry | May I ask what's coming in wG9? Is it very different from wG8? | 07:44 |
gry | Or it doesn't exist and WRE versioning is different? | 07:44 |
@scrottie | there should be an error log somewhere | 07:44 |
@scrottie | I don't remember where the installer sets it to be | 07:44 |
@scrottie | maybe right up in the install directory | 07:45 |
@scrottie | but looking at WebGUI's log would be the first step. | 07:45 |
@scrottie | $webgui_root/etc/log.conf should tell you where the log is. | 07:45 |
@scrottie | feel free to no-paste the errors for me. I might have an idea, but I'm already doing one or two too many things at once right now ;) | 07:45 |
@scrottie | also, log.conf lets you turn the error level up | 07:45 |
@scrottie | 'DEBUG' is the most verbose | 07:46 |
@scrottie | that should give a general idea of what's happening, and then someone has to go in and insert more debugging statements or attach a debugger or something to figure out exactly what's going wrong. | 07:46 |
@scrottie | or it might be really obvious from the log output. | 07:46 |
gry | ffs, I forgot password again. | 07:47 |
gry | 3rd time today. | 07:47 |
@scrottie | haha | 07:47 |

@scrottie | replace into settings (name, value) values ('showDebug', '1'); replace into settings (name, value) values ('debugIp', '127.0.0.1'); | 07:49 |
@scrottie | that'll get you a bunch of on-page debugging | 07:49 |

@scrottie | okay, I have to finish fixing danny's bug then I'll try to get around to fixing this one. | 07:57 |
@scrottie | in theory, the unit tests should cover this stuff. | 07:57 |

@scrottie | nope. I don't know why that's appearing if that is the case. | 07:58 |
@scrottie | they would share WebGUI::Asset::Wobject. that's it. | 07:58 |
@scrottie | line 2796 of Asset.pm (eg /data/WebGUI/lib/WebGUI/Asset.pm)... if you like, change that to just $prototype->get rather than $prototype->getProperty and see if that fixes it? I think getProperty() is an archaic alias for get() | 08:00 |

@scrottie | gry, nope. Postgres support is on the long term todo list, but that would involve breaking the core out, making it work either way, and then letting people port the various different assets as they needed them and had time. | 03:11 |
gry | okay | 03:12 |
gry | it's pretty ram intensive for a small non-profit project I have | 03:12 |
@scrottie | yeah. | 03:12 |
@scrottie | that's another thing on the list: Coro the whole thing up. | 03:12 |
gry | and it looks like there is few debugging to do, the gallery feature uploads images but messes up the thumbnails so they're empty | 03:12 |
gry | 'Coro'? | 03:13 |
@scrottie | http://search.cpan.org/~mlehmann/Coro-6.23/Coro.pm | 03:13 |
@scrottie | http://search.cpan.org/~miyagawa/Corona-0.1004/lib/Corona.pm | 03:13 |
gry | ah. so people can use multiple requests at the same time? | 03:13 |
gry | (which I assumed they can't do now?) | 03:13 |
@scrottie | I'm backlogged on bugs right now, but you should go to http://webgui.org/8 and open bug tickets for each problem you have. | 03:14 |
@scrottie | one ticket each, please. | 03:14 |
@scrottie | and post traces and error log output and such in each. | 03:14 |
@scrottie | exactly, re: multiple requests at the same time. | 03:14 |
gry | did you add that issue about 'request tracker' getProperty stuff or should I add it? | 03:14 |
@scrottie | otherwise, each process has to have its own copy of each item in cache. | 03:14 |
@scrottie | I have some details about it open in a browser tab | 03:14 |
@scrottie | if you still have the trace handy, please put it in there. otherwise, I'll paste it in. | 03:15 |
@scrottie | also, the quickest way to get you running might be for me to add support for "PlebGUI" to the installer. | 03:15 |
@scrottie | as much as it's nice to have help testing 8! | 03:15 |
@scrottie | PlebGUI is a Plack-ified version of WebGUI7. WebGUI8 started largely with that patch. | 03:15 |
@scrottie | unless you're happy to keep testing and going through the slow process of waiting for fixes! | 03:16 |
@scrottie | again, it is really nice to have someone help test who knows how to read the log and post stack traces and screenshots and knows their way around Unix. | 03:16 |

gry | ok, it might be better if you pasted this one in (I just have links to the paste in my logs) | 03:20 |
@scrottie | okay, will do, next time I'm going through tabs. | 03:21 |
gry | not sure how long I'd keep that running on the server, it + mysql are taking a lot of ram. But if I stop doing that, I'd simply set the stuff up in a vm | 03:21 |
@scrottie | how little RAM does the server have? | 03:22 |
@scrottie | I develop on a dual core 1.2ghz machine that has 2 gigs of RAM. | 03:22 |
@scrottie | wG doesn't take up nearly as much RAM as firefox. | 03:22 |
@scrottie | you can reduce memory usage by editing the .conf file and removing mention of assets that you don't plan to use | 03:23 |
@scrottie | mysql probably has a lot of RAM mmap'd to files. that shouldn't be in-core memory, but the large number can be scary. | 03:24 |
@scrottie | wG does eat up a lot of RAM in caching things. | 03:24 |
gry | 196 in use out of 247MB; a lot cached | 03:27 |
gry | my laptop has specs similar to what you mentioned, but twice better: think a 2.4 ghz processor and 4GB ram | 03:28 |
gry | so it could be pretty much fine on it | 03:28 |
@scrottie | that machine only has 247 megs of RAM? what the heck is it? | 03:28 |
gry | a small server, i suppose | 03:38 |
@scrottie | is it a Raspberry Pi or what? I love small machines! and old machines. please tell me that you're running wG on a Sparc 10. | 03:38 |
gry | a xen vps, I don't have hardware access to it | 03:38 |
@scrottie | ah. | 03:38 |
@scrottie | you can make wG go a lot faster than as how it ships. some quite busy sites have been built on it. large, busy sites with lots of user generated content on a CMS is always an interesting proposition. | 03:39 |
@scrottie | ... but there has not been much work on making it slimmer. | 03:40 |
@scrottie | I have an OpenSSI cluster sitting here (http://openssi.org/cgi-bin/view?page=features.html). with all of the nodes on, it has 9 cores. | 03:41 |
@scrottie | unless I add other random machines like the Pentium 4 Celeron desktop and random old x86 laptops. | 03:41 |
@scrottie | but nominally, it has 9 cores. | 03:41 |
@scrottie | you're welcome to an account on it. | 03:41 |
@scrottie | it doesn't currently have a static IP. | 03:42 |
@scrottie | I run a WebGUI 8 on it on Gorona | 03:43 |
@scrottie | holy cow, I never put Gorona on CPAN | 03:43 |
@scrottie | http://github.com/scrottie/Gorona | 03:43 |
@scrottie | and I love how no one ever asks me why I need a small "supercomputer" to run a Gopher server. | 03:45 |

gry | scrottie: great, it works -- it's the same thing as 'Collaboration System' with the templates changed from collaborationsystem* to requesttracker*. It still lacks a field for a bug state (open, fixed, wintfix etc) which I can see in wG7 bug tracker you linked me to. | 00:51 |
@scrottie | yeah, I guess I was wrong about that. I haven't heard of one asset actually being another one before. and that's probably why it was sploding... prototype data passed to www_add | 00:51 |
@scrottie | re: bug state form field, hmm. | 00:53 |

@scrottie | I want to look at the templates it is using. | 01:02 |
gry | Yeah, http://demo.webgui.org/demo1361142121_186/home/bugs doesn't have bug state either. I am yet to wonder what http://webgui.org/8 uses :-) | 01:03 |
gry | The default login data, 'Admin' '123qwe'. | 01:03 |
@scrottie | likely PlainBlack work that never made it into the default distro | 01:04 |
@scrottie | or else something from http://www.webgui.org/addons | 01:04 |
gry | aww | 01:04 |
gry | I don't see how to search or browse addons, do you? | 01:05 |
@scrottie | click one of the box headers to get them sorted that way | 01:05 |
@scrottie | aside from the site wide search, I don't see a search either | 01:05 |
gry | http://www.webgui.org/community/addons appears to have search, but a search for 'tracker' comes up with nothing | 01:06 |
gry | same with 'bug' and 'issue' | 01:06 |
gry | they find something, but not a thing that looks relevant to what I'm looking for :-) | 01:07 |
@scrottie | get the attention of one of the PlainBlack staffers during the day tomorrow and ask them to export a copy of the relavent template for you. | 01:07 |
@scrottie | and send you a wgpkg | 01:07 |
gry | I would only hope that it works on 8 I guess? or won't it? | 01:08 |
@scrottie | it should. | 01:08 |
gry | great, please do that and thanks :-) | 01:08 |
@scrottie | me do that? huh? | 01:08 |
@scrottie | no, you ask a PlainBlack staffer Monday. | 01:08 |
gry | ah | 01:08 |
@scrottie | for that template. | 01:08 |
gry | how can I find them? | 01:08 |
@scrottie | I don't have access anymore, I don't think. | 01:08 |
@scrottie | let's see | 01:09 |
@scrottie | in the "Edit" view for a request tracker, in the Display tab, I'm guessing probably the "Collaboration System, Post Form Template" | 01:09 |
@scrottie | which is set by default to "Request Tracker Post Form" | 01:10 |
@scrottie | they may have copied and modified that one to add more form fields | 01:11 |
gry | playing with it at the demo now | 01:12 |
@scrottie | <select id="myCustomField1" name="userDefined1"> ... ah, yeah, it's using the "userDefined" fields... that one for severity | 01:12 |
gry | <tmpl_var fatal.label> <-- those things are localized I guess | 01:12 |
@scrottie | yup. | 01:13 |
@scrottie | at night, often the Dutch guys are on and hanging out. they're fun. | 01:14 |
@scrottie | they're probably closer to your time zone. | 01:15 |
gry | hanging out here? | 01:55 |
gry | how do i um, realize who they are? | 01:56 |
@scrottie | generally, they have ops | 01:57 |
@scrottie | in theory. | 01:57 |
@scrottie | umm. | 01:57 |
@scrottie | in practise, it's daviddelikat or perlDreamer. | 01:57 |
gry | can we just ask the former now as he's here ^^ | 01:59 |
* gry shall wait for them to wake up | 01:59
@scrottie | if he were unidle, he'd have responded. | 01:59 |
gry | :) | 01:59 |
@scrottie | it's his weekend. I'm guessing he isn't here. and I know from experience, he doesn't backlog. | 01:59 |
@scrottie | your best bet is to keep an eye out during US business hours for one of those two. | 02:00 |
gry | yup, thanks :) | 02:00 |
@scrottie | alternatively, you could read up on HTML::Template and Template::Toolkit (or whichever one that template is) and take a shot at editing the tempalte yourself | 02:00 |
@scrottie | I could dig up some doc references on webgui.org for how to make templates | 02:01 |
gry | I can see it has some foo.url stuff in it, such as sort by something, which the table header items link to. I think that it might be more than a template file that I need to edit, especially if I'd like it to be localized properly | 02:04 |
@scrottie | there's an International macro you can call. | 02:04 |
@scrottie | getting templates from a staffer is probably the simplest thing to try first. | 02:05 |
gry | it is :) | 02:07 |
@scrottie | or maybe it isn't, if they never wake up =| | 02:07 |
gry | if I can sit and wait without sweating and editing files, that's ok ;-) | 02:07 |
@daviddelikat | hey gry what's up? | 02:23 |
gry | daviddelikat: hi! thetre is an issue tracker at http://webgui.org/8, what software is it powered by? I'm looking for a issue tracker like that for my site | 02:25 |
gry | s/thetre/there/ | 02:25 |
@scrottie | it looks like the templates that come with wG for the Request Tracker don't have form controls for open/closed/etc. I suggested getting a wgpkg of the templates used on webgui.org and trying those. | 02:26 |
@scrottie | we couldn't find anything in the Bazaar offhand. | 02:26 |
@daviddelikat | should be this: https://github.com/plainblack/helpdesk | 02:28 |
@daviddelikat | its a side package you can install | 02:28 |
@daviddelikat | sort of a plugin | 02:28 |
@daviddelikat | but it is not a simple process of getting it workign | 02:28 |
@scrottie | aha! | 02:28 |
@scrottie | well, the install instructions don't look bad at all (completely typical), but if it adds an asset class, then it is wG7 only unless ported to 8. | 02:30 |
@scrottie | thanks, delikat. | 02:30 |
@daviddelikat | I think the main site is running WG8 | 02:31 |
@daviddelikat | so that means it should be ported | 02:31 |
gry | hmm. | 02:31 |
gry | ok, I'll be trying it now, give me a few mins | 02:32 |
@daviddelikat | nope its at 7.10 | 02:32 |
@daviddelikat | if you are trying on WG8 then I wouldn't try too hard unless you're porting it | 02:35 |

@scrottie | please message me here, not on Skype. the Skype machine is usually sleeping. | 19:24 |
+danny_mk | OK, will do | 19:24 |
@scrottie | thanks =) | 19:24 |
@scrottie | and let's see if we can find a way to do that other than iframes. I don't think they're needed. | 19:24 |
+danny_mk | is it a good idea to create a webgui branch for the html and css for the new interface? | 19:25 |
@scrottie | always a good idea to work in a branch, yup. | 19:25 |
+danny_mk | Would not mind people taking a look at what it is so far | 19:25 |
@scrottie | I'd love to | 19:25 |
+danny_mk | so create a branch off my github account right? | 19:25 |
@scrottie | 'git branch <whatever>', 'git checkout <whatever>', add and commit stuff, and push it (command depends on how things are set up) | 19:26 |
@scrottie | yup | 19:26 |
+danny_mk | https://github.com/dannymk/webgui | 19:26 |
@scrottie | okay, one minute | 19:26 |
+danny_mk | maybe call it WebGUI8-Admin-Interface | 19:26 |
@scrottie | you pushed it to your dannymk/webgui already? as master? | 19:27 |
+danny_mk | no, have not done anything yet | 19:28 |
+danny_mk | just working on suggestions on how to realease | 19:28 |
+danny_mk | before I even create a branch I am just looking for suggestions on where to put the stuff | 19:29 |
@scrottie | branching, adding and commiting to the branch, and pushing that up to your github makes the most sense | 19:29 |
+danny_mk | right | 19:29 |
+danny_mk | let me explain | 19:30 |
+danny_mk | I am just going to put up the html, javascript and css in a directory so that anyone can open index and see what the interface looks like | 19:30 |
+danny_mk | now after I branch I want to decide where to put the html/js/css | 19:31 |
+danny_mk | what directory | 19:31 |
+danny_mk | it could be under www/contributed or something like that | 19:31 |
+danny_mk | what do you think? | 19:32 |
@scrottie | oh. I would just make a gist for that. it's a git repo but without all of the overhead and it doesn't show up on your github page unless you click on the gists. | 19:35 |
@scrottie | go to gist.github.com, put 'test' or something in, save it, check that out, add files to it, and push it back up again | 19:36 |
+danny_mk | OK | 19:37 |
+danny_mk | public gist right? | 19:38 |
@scrottie | yeah | 19:39 |
@scrottie | I lost the ability to rsync and sftp files up to my linode. I rebuilt ssh/sshd on my laptop and on it. maybe I need to reboot the laptop... | 19:48 |
+danny_mk | https://gist.github.com/dannymk/4997382 | 20:09 |
+danny_mk | scrottie: It's still a little crude but it is getting there | 20:53 |
@scrottie | the pop-up works | 21:21 |
@scrottie | and that's an iframe...? | 21:21 |
+danny_mk | yes | 21:21 |
@scrottie | I'll try to look into making that just a div | 21:22 |
+danny_mk | it is already just a div that includes an iframe | 21:22 |
+danny_mk | we can load dynamic html into that div | 21:23 |
@scrottie | oh. why did they bother with an iframe, then? for the scrollbar? | 21:23 |
+danny_mk | it is easier to implement this way because the admin stuff includes lots of html that will break a div | 21:23 |
+danny_mk | it has to be cleaned up to remove all the extra stuff | 21:24 |
+danny_mk | I also placed the admin template in that directory | 21:24 |
+danny_mk | the current one | 21:24 |
@scrottie | hrm. | 21:25 |
@scrottie | well, there's also lots of stuff that breaks being in an iframe. | 21:25 |
@scrottie | one way or another, the admin proper is going to need some work. | 21:25 |
+danny_mk | yes, the ideal here may be to load the default one into an iframe, create a tab to port the stuff to other tabs while keeping the iframe up front | 21:26 |
+danny_mk | I would definitely recommend getting away from the iframe but it is going to require work | 21:26 |
+danny_mk | I think it is still a better interface | 21:27 |
@scrottie | no question there =P | 21:27 |
+danny_mk | also grouping stuff may remove the head for the accordion | 21:28 |
@scrottie | hmm? | 21:29 |
+danny_mk | head=need | 21:29 |
@scrottie | I was assuming the left side accordion thing was getting the axe in favor of the new stuff? | 21:29 |
+danny_mk | yes, that was the intent | 21:29 |
+danny_mk | I am just looking for suggestions | 21:30 |
@scrottie | on what to do, or on how to do it? | 21:33 |
+danny_mk | on what to do | 21:34 |
+danny_mk | how to do it has to come through contributions if someone wants to help | 21:34 |
@scrottie | exactly what you're doing. kill the accordion, use Drupal's admin UI without change (to start with; can always decide to change the color or whatever later) | 21:34 |
+danny_mk | yes | 21:34 |
+danny_mk | that is easy stuff | 21:34 |
+danny_mk | OK | 21:35 |
+danny_mk | will work on killing the accordion next | 21:35 |
@scrottie | yup. I'll help you get it hooked up. getting ready to reboot Linux here... I really need to take a week and blow Linux away and try FreeBSD again. | 21:35 |
@scrottie | that's one of the two frames pulled in by the admin template in the gist notes I posted. | 21:36 |
@scrottie | and I can run do more research as needed, too. | 21:36 |
+danny_mk | quick reference to backup and restore the db and site using wgd would be great | 21:36 |
+danny_mk | I can do it manually or by writing a quick script but once I change the admin template I am sure I will run into trouble | 21:37 |
@scrottie | I always did that with mysqldump/mysql, for some reason | 21:37 |
+danny_mk | OK, that is what I will do | 21:38 |
@scrottie | mysqldump --user=root --add-drop-table --complete-insert --skip-extended-insert www_example_com(or whatever database) | gzip > dump.sql.gz | 21:38 |
+danny_mk | LOL, yup got that | 21:38 |
@scrottie | oops, needs a --password in there before it will even prompt for a password | 21:38 |
@scrottie | then: zcat dump.sql.gz | mysql --user=root --password www_example_com | 21:39 |
@scrottie | to un-dump it | 21:39 |
+danny_mk | it would be great if I could just do: update table set admin_template='webgui_admin' where assetid = ... | 21:39 |
+danny_mk | just to change the admin template back to the old one just in case I break something | 21:39 |
+danny_mk | it is one of the settings values | 21:40 |
@scrottie | wgd setting templateIdAdmin=whatever | 21:40 |
+danny_mk | I will try to find it | 21:40 |
@scrottie | or else: update settings set value='whatever' where name='templateIdAdmin'; | 21:40 |
@scrottie | that's one of a few templates involved. | 21:40 |
+danny_mk | hmmm... cool. That definitely helps | 21:41 |
@scrottie | =) | 21:41 |
@scrottie | (I often just do select * from settings where value='whatever' to see if there is a setting for a template) | 21:41 |
+danny_mk | OK, have to break for lunch. Talk to you later... | 21:44 |

ckotil | awww, that figures. the really cool features always get left out. | 19:23 |
ckotil | danny_mk: i dont have anything specific. But perhaps maybe something making webgui google docs aware, and it could just link ot google docs for the complex things. so in webgui you would see a list of documents, and clicking on one would take you to gdocs for editing. | 19:24 |
ckotil | again, i dunno. just thinking out loud | 19:24 |
@scrottie | we used Google Docs Spreadsheet for the Tempe Bike Count. people entering data got kicked out every several minutes, all at the same time, over and over again. (people doing the count used physical count sheets made of dead tree.) then when I went to do Q/A on the data, it was garbage. I basically had to reenter *all* of it myself, because Google kept dropping columns. people would hit tab and it wouldn't advance, or they'd enter a zero and | 19:25 |
@scrottie | ... or they'd enter a zero and Google would drop the keystroke. it was a disaster. | 19:25 |
ckotil | that sounds painful. i havent hit any issues yet with it. but i havent used it extensively for anything | 19:26 |
@scrottie | it's nice for putting together bids on projects while you're voice conferenced together, but I don't do that often enough that I care about it. | 19:26 |
ckotil | a couple other guys in my group have been using it a lot to track some router interface moves, for a bunch of different locations. | 19:26 |
@scrottie | assets that pull from Google Docs would be cool. | 19:26 |
ckotil | seems to work well. i viewed the spreadsheet, and spotted a typo. and *poof* he fixed it right away. that was the mind blowing part | 19:26 |
@scrottie | it is nifty, but Google didn't invent that. writely did a web based thing apparently inspired by SubEthaEdit for the Mac. then someone tried to do a whole office suite like that. *then* Google came in and trounced everyone. | 19:28 |
@scrottie | and I was working on a game in late 90's on Netscape 2 that did that ;) | 19:28 |
ckotil | sounds like a nightmare to implement well | 19:28 |
ckotil | heh | 19:29 |
@scrottie | had a ring buffer of forms that it populated with data to send to the server and forced submit on. they were each in a frame that was size 0 so they were their own page so it didn't affect the main page. and then another frame was doing Netscape "server push" stuff, which kept a connection open and pushed one MIME object after another, but it was pushing web pages full of JavaScript with calls to JS in the other window to scroll the map | 19:30 |
@scrottie | change icons, add texts to the log, change HP, etc | 19:30 |
@scrottie | wasn't bad to implement at all. it was a lot of fun. | 19:31 |
@scrottie | nothing had ids in JS1 in NS2. it was all document.windows[0].forms[1]. | 19:32 |
@scrottie | or names that you could address things by. | 19:32 |
@scrottie | you could append text to the end of the document but couldn't do .innerHTML on things already written to the document. | 19:33 |
ckotil | ah the good ole days | 19:33 |
@scrottie | but you could change the contents of textareas, of course. | 19:33 |
@scrottie | yup! | 19:33 |
ckotil | before my time tho. i first touched a computer in 96 at age 12. yeah do the math ;) | 19:35 |

Namd | Is any one here active? | 23:06 |

Namd | ^^ | 23:07 |
+danny_mk | Namd: did you have a question? | 23:07 |
Namd | I am trying to add the helpdesk/bug tracker plugin from https://github.com/plainblack/helpdesk but it seems like there is a missing file. Does any one have any experience with this plugin? | 23:08 |
+danny_mk | errors in the log? | 23:08 |
Namd | ERROR - WebGUI.conf - WebGUI::Asset::loadModule[1919] - Couldn't compile asset package: WebGUI::Asset::Wobject::HelpDesk. Root cause: Attempt to reload WebGUI/Asset/Wobject/HelpDesk.pm aborted. | 23:08 |
+danny_mk | Webgui version? | 23:09 |
Namd | I seem to be missing this pm file WebGUI::Definition::Asset | 23:09 |
Namd | WebGUI 7.10.26 | 23:10 |
+danny_mk | did you run testEnvironment.pl ? | 23:10 |
Namd | In /data/WebGUI/sbin yes but i did not find a test environment script for the plugin | 23:11 |
+danny_mk | I have it running on my version and I am running 7.10.27 | 23:12 |
Namd | i setup three environments a development, test and production my test and production environment is upgraded to 7.10.27 but I was unable to find it in that package | 23:13 |
+danny_mk | OK, how far did you get following the instructions on github? | 23:14 |
Namd | up to number 6. when i restarted apache and spectre i was looking for a helpdesk object under intranet but it was not there so i looked in the log file and see it had issues compiling. From there i went to command line and tried to execute the package to confirm that it was a compile issue. It stated "Can't locate WebGUI/Definition/Asset.pm" | 23:17 |
Namd | I have multiple Asset.pm files within the data folder but i do not have a WebGUI/Definition folder | 23:18 |
+danny_mk | Hmmm... I don't have that either | 23:21 |
Namd | FYI: All three environments have been installed fresh. None of them have been upgraded from previous versions. | 23:21 |
+danny_mk | I don't even have a reference to it in my Helpdesk package | 23:21 |
Namd | Which helpdesk package are you using? | 23:22 |

Namd | What method do you guys use for moving your code over to a new environment and keeping your modified code seperate from your "out of the box" code? | 22:26 |

Namd | yup | 22:27 |
+danny_mk | ring a bell? :-P | 22:28 |
Namd | I dont think thats the proper tool for me | 22:28 |
+danny_mk | it takes a bit getting used to but there are some good youtube tutorials | 22:28 |
+danny_mk | look into it, you may NOT be dissapointed | 22:29 |
Namd | Watching one now so i can get a better understanding of it | 22:33 |
ckotil | i should do that too. im such a git noob. cvs to svn wasn't too bad. but svn to git is like learning chinease to me | 22:37 |
Namd | I was trying to figure out the best way to isolate my modified code. With the pm files I have figured out how to do that but I am not sure the best method for the imports. I was originally thinking that i could just create a folder under that and place all my modifications within that directory. | 22:41 |
Namd | Then I looked into how some of the dropdowns were working and thought to myself maybe i should ask the experts | 22:43 |
+danny_mk | using git and wgd will definitely help | 22:47 |

Namd | I feel like I still need to manage the data more befure using git (and wgd). I will keep disecting the code. thanks again for your help | 22:52 |
haarg | if you can keep your changes as entirely separate files, that's one way. but if you are wanting to modify existing files, git is probably the best way to manage that. | 22:54 |
Namd | I was planning on keeping them as seperate files that way I can upgrade webgui without wrecking any of the features | 22:55 |
haarg | wgd has a couple options for shipping content around too. it can use packages, which is a built in webgui feature, or it can export its own text file format. | 22:56 |
haarg | as long as they actually are separate files that makes sense, and not modified copies of core files. | 22:56 |
Namd | What do you do for your imports folder though? I made a subdirectory and was going to place everything within it. But that does not seem to work too well for generating the drop down menus for something like the style template | 22:59 |
haarg | it should work for that | 23:00 |
Namd | I was trying to figure out how the drop down menus were being created but im not too sure im looking at the right code. I had to grep all files for "Style Template" then go back through international calls | 23:00 |
haarg | and you can export an entire folder as a package if you need to copy it to a separate site | 23:01 |
Namd | that was my next step :) | 23:01 |
-!- daviddelikat [~dav@adsl-71-150-253-140.dsl.mdsnwi.sbcglobal.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving.] | 23:01
haarg | the drop downs are generated by finding all of the templates of a given type | 23:01 |
sbaur | we use preload.custom then have a separate directory (wg-custom) for all of our assets and macros | 23:03 |
sbaur | only problem with this is stuff that should be in the extras folder. | 23:03 |
Namd | hmm maybe i am having a caching issue then | 23:08 |
haarg | iirc the templates also have to be committed | 23:09 |
sbaur | as do any container assets (e.g. dataform) | 23:09 |
ckotil | can I let users input variables that the sql report asset can then use? | 23:48 |
ckotil | I want to let the user define a date, and then do select * from foo where last_modified > DATE("$date") | 23:49 |
sbaur | I've done that with checkboxes, so yes | 23:49 |
sbaur | Date may be difficult (translating to epoch, etc) | 23:49 |
ckotil | with the sql report asset? | 23:49 |
sbaur | yes | 23:49 |
ckotil | ok cool. thanks | 23:49 |
sbaur | let me see if I can find my example... *goes off to look what server it might be on* | 23:50 |
haarg | you should be able to use ? placeholders in the query, and the fill them in with form variables | 23:50 |
haarg | how that all works out in the ui i don't remember | 23:50 |
ckotil | ah, very cool | 23:52 |
ckotil | i was hoping i could get at the form var's | 23:52 |
haarg | iirc the tooltip for one of the text boxes covers it | 23:52 |
ckotil | even better | 23:53 |

+danny_mk | What are we using to generate unique ids in WebGUI8? WebGUI::Session::Id states: "his module is deprecated, and will be removed during the WebGUI 8.x series." | 18:51 |
+danny_mk | Will $session->id->generate still be supported in 8? | 18:51 |

qwebirc84965 | Hello. I have a couple of inquiries. What is the status of WebGUI 8? & Is there a Responsive theme or can you recommend a Responsive Framework. | 19:10 |
+danny_mk | what are you calling a responsive theme? | 19:34 |
+danny_mk | You can build your own, there are a few that come "out of the box" | 19:34 |
+danny_mk | I am working on one but that is going to take some time | 19:34 |

@scrottie | someone was talking about "responsive" stuff before. I didn't realise that this was a Thing with a capital T. | 21:26 |
@scrottie | I wanted to know what wasn't responding. | 21:26 |
@scrottie | sbaur sent me some links but they really didn't clear up the mystery. | 21:27 |
@scrottie | I find very JS heavy apps to often be *not* pariticularly responsive. | 21:27 |
@scrottie | actually, when they suggested making a "responsive website", I suggested Continuity and HTML1.0. that *screams*. | 21:27 |
sbaur | I believe this is more responsive in the sense of oh, hey, a mobile browser, let's do stuff different | 21:28 |
@scrottie | danny_mk, re: uniqe ids, let me look. | 21:28 |
@scrottie | oh, hmm. | 21:28 |
+danny_mk | I used $session->id->generate | 21:28 |
@scrottie | I thought things were moving the other way... it used to be that there were mobile specific versions of sites, but then mobile browsers became just versions of the desktop ones, and screen resolutions caught up | 21:29 |
+danny_mk | a good question: in WebGUI8, there is no way to setup the template parser for new/existing templates | 21:29 |
@scrottie | huh? | 21:29 |
@scrottie | http://pastie.org/6349443 | 21:30 |
@scrottie | re: ids | 21:30 |
+danny_mk | Create a new template in WebGUI8, where do you set it to use WebGUI::Asset::Template::TemplateToolkit | 21:30 |
@scrottie | looks like WebGUI::GUID is the new thing. | 21:30 |
+danny_mk | yah! got that far | 21:30 |
@scrottie | I have no idea what you're talking about when you say "there is no way to setup the template parser for new/existing templates". I'm pretty sure I've created new templates in wG8. | 21:31 |
@scrottie | be more specific about what you're trying to do and having trouble with. | 21:31 |
@scrottie | and sorry to not be around much the past few days... | 21:31 |
@scrottie | Tempe Bike Count stuff has been *intense* | 21:31 |
@scrottie | I've been on the phone and responding to email non-stop, and going to meetings, to 10-12 hours a day | 21:31 |
+danny_mk | hey, at least you got a job! | 21:32 |
@scrottie | no I don't. | 21:34 |
@scrottie | volunteer. | 21:34 |
Namd | I am trying to find an asset with a sepcific url and I am unsure where it is located within the asset tree. Does any one know what the MySQL table is that that information is located within? I tried to use the search feature within assets but had no luck :( | 21:38 |
sbaur | assetData | 21:38 |
Namd | thank you | 21:38 |
sbaur | select * from assetData where url like ''; | 21:38 |
Namd | I was hoping some of that information would help me find where its located within the asset tree. How would you suggest I do that? | 21:40 |
sbaur | once you have the asseId, use that to get the parentId from the asset table | 21:42 |
sbaur | select parentId from asset where assetId in (select assetId from assetData where url like ...); | 21:42 |
sbaur | that will give you the asset Id for the page the url in question lives on, once you have that, you can get this page's URL | 21:43 |
sbaur | or, the other way is to just go to the url, tack ?func=edit onto it, then use the admin console link to go to assets | 21:44 |
sbaur | that will show you where it is | 21:44 |
sbaur | and if i remembered the op for manage assets, that would be the faster way to get there | 21:44 |
Namd | the second way is much easier to me | 22:02 |
Namd | a bit confusing tho because when i append ?func=edit to the url/file it it shows up in the edit but its pointing to a different edit | 22:06 |
Namd | maybe i am missing something major. I was questioning what the update feature in the asset list actually does? I should probably be using that huh? | 22:07 |
Namd | Running that didnt help :/ | 22:08 |
Namd | What I did was duplicated the wg-base.css and edited that to my new style sheet. When I try to save my new style sheet it wont save as the name i want it to though. It keeps appending a 2 to it (before the file extension). Then when I try to link to the original file name it keeps referring back to the orginal wg-base.css file | 22:11 |
Namd | Is it safe to delete the record from assetData with that url? | 22:19 |
Namd | looks like that worked :) thanks | 22:24 |

sbaur | the old file is in (was in) and old revision, that's why you couldn't rename to it | 23:04 |

sbaur | Using change URL on the asset that used to have the old name is the cleanest way to get rid of it (so when the edit opened to the "wrong" thing) you could have gone into the asset manager, done a change URL on the asset to it's current name, then it would have deleted all older revisions, and the old name would now be available for your new thing | 23:05 |
