+danny_mksbaur:  you have time this week to checkout the tests?20:19
sbaurhmm, I have about an hour right now... so yes20:49
sbaurmight be enough time to get setup danny_mk20:50
sbaurso, just downloaded the most recent wg8 from github (not checked out, but downloaded) got the following error21:21
sbaursyntax error at testEnvironment.pl line 463, near "$answer ~"21:21
sbaurwhen running testEnvironment.pl21:21
sbaurwondering if this is something particular to my environment (my version of perl?) or if ti's an actual bug that needs filing21:23
sbaurI'm running perl 5.8.821:24
sbaurscrottie, danny_mk, any ideas?21:26
@scrottiesbaur, you need 5.1021:35
@scrottie5.8.8 is quite old21:35
sbaurwell, I'm on a quite old box with a quite old version of the WRE21:36
@scrottiebut it should have a use 5.10 line so it fails for want of 5.10.  that's a bug.21:36
@scrottie5.8 was probably old when it was wrapped up in that wre21:36
@scrottieI think 5.8 is more than 10 years old now21:36
sbaurI'm sure it was :)21:36
@scrottieit's probably barfing on $answer ~~ @arr or the use of the new ~~ op in general21:37
@scrottiedanny_mk, yeah, hoping to get Selenium running this week21:37
sbauri thought that might be the prob...21:38
sbaurso, what's the correct place for reporting wg8 bugs?21:39
sbaurnevermind, i found21:40
sbaurit21:40
@scrottiewebgui.org/821:44
@scrottieplease21:44
sbaurit's reported21:45
@scrottiethanks, sbaur21:45
@scrottiedanny_mk, just so you know, I'm going to look at fixing admin bugs after I kind of kick my installer out the door and get to that stopping point there21:45
sbaurwow, the girl still running wg 7.5, got to report a bug in 8... before release even :D21:45
@scrottieand I need to get back to that21:45
@scrottiehaha21:45
sbaurI'll even put together a list of all the modules the WRE doesn't have...21:49
sbauri've already got 20, and i'm only a few lines in...21:50
@scrottieperlDreamer is working on a new WRE right now21:55
@scrottiewe're trying to shake some bugs out of HandlerSocket related code21:55
sbaurahhh21:55
@scrottieso it should be updated with respect to the modules that wG8 needs.  I've personally added several things to testEnvironment but there's always a chance something got missed.21:56
@scrottieif there's something on your list not in testEnvironment, well, that's a bug.21:57
* sbaur has a list of 48 so far, including stuff for building/testing21:57
@scrottiewow.21:59
@scrottieokay, which version of perl are you using right now to run testEnvironment?22:00
@scrottieit sounds like a lot of the missing modules are stuff that aren't bundled with that version of perl but got added later22:00
sbaurwhatever was in the WRE I downloaded (it was definitely a 5.10)22:00
@scrottieokay22:00
@scrottieworking with source installs a lot makes a lot of this stuff not be on my radar, so to speak22:01
sbaurheh, never knew there was a module called common::sense22:03
* sbaur now at 7822:05
@scrottieno kidding.22:05
@scrottieI might have to cut some of these deps.22:05
sbaura lot of them are deps of deps22:06
@scrottiecommon::sense is one of several attempts to enforce (and declare) "modern" programming style22:06
@scrottiesee also perl5, Modern::Perl22:06
@scrottieer, perl5i22:06
@scrottieyeah.22:06
@scrottiedeps with too many and too troublesome of deps may have to be cut.22:07
sbaurno trouble installing any of em yet22:07
* sbaur knocks on wood22:07
@scrottietestEnvironment.pl doesn't try to list deps fo deps though22:07
@scrottieand deps of deps change over time so even if it did, it would need updated every time one module changed deps22:07
sbaurtrue, but they all need to be in the WRE22:08
@scrottiethe idea is that testEnvironment requires X be installed, and if X happens to want other modules, they get automatically, recursively installed also22:08
@scrottieah, right22:08
sbaurand, I'm saying yes to everything...22:08
sbaurso far LWP is still the one with the most dependencies22:09
sbaurOk, Moose may have just surpassed LWP22:13
* sbaur is now at 116 packages added to WRE22:14
* sbaur install seems stalled trying to get some checksums...22:15
* sbaur no longer stalled22:18
sbaurtestEnvironment  would run much faster if all the installs didn't run all their billions of tests22:20
@scrottiethat's true.22:20
sbaurit's been 30 min so far, and testE is still not done22:24
sbaurand i have a fast  and wide network connection22:24
@scrottiethis is a very good argument for having everything pre-installed in a WRE.22:27
sbaurmaybe with a run tests/ will never run tests option22:28
* sbaur at 169 now22:29
sbauralso found this error     This version of DateTime::Locale conflicts with the version of22:31
sbaur    DateTime::Format::Strptime (1.0800) you have installed.22:31
sbaur    You will need to upgrade DateTime::Format::Strptime after installing this version of22:31
sbaur    DateTime::Locale.22:31
@scrottieargh.  deps.  okay, well, the WRE just has to do that then.22:37
sbaurand, after over 30 minutes " Install of Number::Format failed!"22:37
sbaurthat's after 182 things installed22:38
sbaurand I need to get going, so have no time to look into it now22:38
sbaursee you tomorrow22:38

+danny_mksbaur: any progress on installation?18:33
sbaurhave not had any time to work on it since I got "Install of Number::Format failed!"18:34
sbaurI may have some time later today, but I don't yet know if there are any fires that need fighting...18:34
+danny_mkwell, it seems that WebGUI may need more help in that area18:34
+danny_mkOK, let me know, maybe I can help18:35
@scrottiecpanm might be able to install Number::Format where cpan can't19:17
haargi'd be interested in why it failed to install, so a paste of the failed install output would be good19:19
sbaurOutput is at http://pastebin.com/KnJy4s2f19:55
@scrottiesbaur, nice!  straight up failing tests.19:59
@scrottieyou can force installation anyway.  I wonder what the odds are of Number::Format having to work on rubles on your system.19:59
sbaurless than 0?19:59
@scrottieheh20:00
@scrottiehttps://rt.cpan.org/NoAuth/Bugs.html?Dist=Number-Format claims to be the bug tracker for the module20:00
@scrottiethey might be interested to see that (and know your OS and perl version)20:00

sbaurI ran into problems with the WRE last time I tried to install on RHEL 6. Has anyone had success on that platform? And if so, could I have your notes?21:06
sbaurAnd, I see there's a ceontos-5 version of the 0.9.6 WRE. But no source and no other platform binaries. Is that where perlDreamer is doing his WRE for WG8 work?21:07
@scrottiehrm, got a machine here that's CentOS release 5.8 (Final)21:07
@scrottieyou'd have to ask him.  I don't know.  post on the discussion forum?21:08
@scrottiethe source is in github.21:08
@scrottiethe binaries should be a stright up build of those sources.21:08
@scrottieany fix or change that gets made to sources would just go straight back into github... github.com/plainblack/wre-build I think it is21:08
@scrottiehttps://github.com/plainblack/wrebuild21:09
sbaurok, thanks scrottie. I don't have the time to invest right now, so I think I'll just go back to 5.8 and use the binary for 0.9.3, or maybe give the 0.9.6 source a shot at building on my new box21:09
sbauroh, the 096 stuff looks like it's designed to use system componenets...21:11
sbaurfor mysql, etc21:11
@scrottiehmm?  what?21:11
@scrottieI talked to perlDreamer about doing that but didn't realize he was going to try to do it in the wre21:11
sbauri could be wrong in what I'm inferring from https://github.com/plainblack/wrebuild/blob/master/BUILD.redhat21:12
-!- danny_mk [~chatzilla@173-166-55-113-newengland.hfc.comcastbusiness.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]21:15
sbaurand does WG still have issues running on  64bit OS?21:17
@scrottiewG doesn't but the wre does.21:17
sbaurok, that answers that question :-)21:17
@scrottiea 32 bit wre on a 64 bit system is fine until you go to add XS perl modules.21:17
@scrottieand without the modules pre-built on a 32 bit system and already installed, you'll discover that's very difficult to convince all of the various perl module building toolchains to build for 32 bit on a 64 bit system21:18
@scrottieif there isn't a 64 bit wre, I'd do a source install in that case.21:18
sbaurall the predone ones seem to be 32bit21:19
sbaureven the 0.9.6 that's only on sourceforge for centos21:20
sbaurI'll try the 64bit os and the 32bit wg This is only my second/third time reinstalling this box from scratch. If I have to do it again, it's just a bit more time... :)21:21
sbaurs/wg/wre/21:21
sbaurbesides, it'll force me to use and fix my documentation21:23
@scrottiewait, you were doing testEnvironment on a 64 bit system with a 32 bit WRE?21:24
@scrottieand you got that far?21:24
@scrottiewe need a FAQ.21:24
sbaurno,no,no. This is a completely different box21:24
@scrottieso people can hopefully avoid some of these pitfalls without falling into them first.21:24
@scrottieah21:24
sbaurThis is actual new, gotta get it installed hardware. What I was doing yesterday with WG 8 was on a VM21:25

djzorthi there, I am having a dynaloader related segfault with webgui on debian (debian packages or webgui tar ball). I have placed a bug against the debian package. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=68156408:18
djzortI suspect that the problem isn't webgui per-se, but in something dynloader is loading.08:18
djzortim curious if anyone else has seen it?08:19
scrottieare you using the WRE?  is it a 64 bit system?08:55
scrottielet me look at your bug08:56
scrottiereport08:56
scrottieah, the Debian WebGUI package.  right.08:56
scrottieoff the top of my head, nope, haven't heard of this problem.08:56
scrottieI'm not sure that your stack trace is a stack trace...08:57
djzortsomething deep inside isn't happy :|09:00
scrottieyeah.09:00
scrottiethere's no easy way to get a stack trace out of apache/mod_perl.09:00
djzortits almost certainly not webgui's fault per-se, as debians packages and the tarball exhibit the same segfault. its probably a module with XS that going amuck09:02
scrottieright.  I'm just trying to think how to get a proper stack trace attached to that ticket so they can fix it.09:02
djzortyour help would be much appreciated09:03
scrottieif mod_perl forks and then crashes, then there isn't time to attach a debugger to the child process09:05
scrottieif it crashes before it forks, that's easy... run just it inside of mod_perl09:06
scrottiewhat happens when you do 'gdb apachectl start' ?09:06
scrottie(is apachectl start how you start apache/mod_perl/WebGUI?)09:07
scrottieno, that's not exactly right09:09
djzortconventionally I start up with /etc/init.d/apache2 start or service apache2 start depending on tastes at a given moment. both being equivalent. 09:10
scrottie'gdb httpd'09:10
djzortfor debugging purposes, I have created a shell script which provides all the environmental variables that debian init provides09:10
djzortso yes, I can run with gdb httpd (apache2, but yeah)09:10
djzortallow me a moment to fire up the vm09:11

scrottiethen you told it to 'run'?09:24
scrottieokay, then do 'bt'09:24

djzortscrottie: I had a brain wave last night, though it didn't lead anywhere. see new comments on http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=681564 if you have some time to help today I would be very grateful02:34
scrottiehi djzort02:40
scrottieI don't know how serious you are about getting WebGUI running, but if that coredump can't be resolved, running 8 is an option.  it's beta-ware, but it doesn't mod Apache/mod_perl.  it's plack based.02:40
scrottieAPR/Request/Cookie.pm is the last module loaded before the coredump?02:41
scrottieer, doesn't use02:42
djzortthat thought had crossed my mind. but I recognize how much having webgui in debian lowers the bar to using it - so as a perl and debian fan I am happy to persevere in resolving it.02:43
djzortcatalyst is a beast, but is awesome that you can apt-get it02:43
djzortwho cares that it has 1million dependencies02:43
scrottieheh02:43
djzortyeah webgui doesn't use catalyst. just drawing a parallel02:44
scrottiethe maintainer of that package hangs out in here sometimes.02:44
djzort(im exagerating the number of deps, but trying building it against redhat and it will feel like it)02:45
djzort:)02:45
scrottieand I'm sure Debian package maintainers support each other pretty well.02:45
scrottieyeah, there are some modules that wG uses that basically do not build.02:45
scrottieImageMagick is one of them.02:45
scrottiethe C library and Perl bindings are never in sync.02:45
scrottieit's... badly written.  I need to replace that dep.02:45
djzortI digress though, APR/Request/Cookie.pm is the last module to load. but if I load it first or just in a stand alone piece f code there is no problem with  APR/Request/Cookie.pm02:46
djzortImager may be better than ImageMagick. but that's a discussion for another time ;)02:46
scrottiethat only gives a clue as to what might be going wrong.02:46
scrottieif something corrupted state earlier on, then APR/Request/Cookie.pm would only reveal prior damage02:47
djzortif I have preload.perl load in Apache2::Cookie, then it just segfaults after the DBI modules. so I suspect its not APR::Request::Cookie02:47
scrottiethat said, debugging mod_perl problems can be a bugbear.02:47
djzortby way of background, I submitted the bug to debian. waited. then figured I would see if I could get some help02:47
djzortso I decided to ask here02:47
scrottienext time, have an easy problem ;)02:48
djzortnoted :)02:48
djzort8 is looking very promising though. using plack certainly opens doors.02:49
scrottieit cleans out a lot of cruft (and adds a lot more)02:49
scrottiebut it's fresh cruft!02:49
scrottiethat's what's important.02:49
djzortthat's what I have found when inserting plack02:49
djzortI was more thinking that plack enables 'paas' type stuff02:50
scrottiePlack is pretty small.  I like it, personally.02:50
scrottiesome of the things that people did with Moose though... I'd like to simplify that all a bit.02:50
-!- daviddelikat [~dav@76.201.144.224] has quit [Quit: Leaving.]02:50
djzortI agree with that02:51
scrottieI graphed the inheritance/mixin usage of one part of the code, for my own sake, so I could figure out what was going on.  then I showed it to the person who wrote it.  he made a rude remark =P02:51
djzortmiyagawa ?02:51
scrottiewell, getting wG8 to go on your system might be as easy as installing the Task::WebGUI meta-module (with cpan or cpanm)02:52
scrottieno, preaction.  WebGUI specific code.02:52
djzortahh ok02:52
scrottie... and then loading the database, and installing wgd (the FatPacked command line wG admin tool), loading the database, and running upgrades.02:52
scrottieinstall WebGUI from packages should get you everything else you need.02:53
djzortwell, one has to balance between working and well written.02:53
scrottieexcept for those last few modules added more recently.02:53
djzortthere is nothing good about well written code that doesn't do anything :)02:53
djzorthopefully when it works, people will use it, then there will be opportunity to make it well written :)02:53
scrottiewait, badly written that works well versus well written code that works badly?  I'm not sure I see things in those terms.02:53
scrottie*that* I agree with.02:53
scrottiestill, I can't just say that wG8 cleans out cruft and not mention that it also adds some.02:54
djzortim just saying I understand the balance between making something usefull enough to gain traction, and getting lost in perfection under the hood02:54
scrottiesure.02:55
scrottieI think the next step here is to install the -src packages for perl, mod_perl, and Apache2, and build and install those with debugging turned on.03:00
scrottiethat is, if you intent on getting to the bottom of that bug.03:00
scrottie(my httpd, mod_perl, perl, etc are all hand built)03:01
djzortim pondering trying 803:02
scrottiethen you should be able to take any method name you see in the stack trace, find it in the perl source, or the apache2 source, or so on, examine it, figure out what variables are in scope there, dump them, and make sure that everything is sane.03:02

elninohi everyone! it's been a while. 18:44
+danny_mkyup, it has been a while, people are usually in and out here19:09
elninoseveral years ago people would stay, quite busy,but I suspect many of the developers are stil working on v8?19:10
+danny_mkhave you played around with 8 at all?19:11
elninono. I don't have a machine to play with. 19:14
+danny_mkwhat about your personal system and a VM like VMware?19:15
elninolaughable.  =) I had win2000 - and HAD vmware. I *just* upgraded to XP I haven't bother reinstalling the vmware - it was a pain back then, because my system was so obsolete.19:18
elninolol19:18
elninoI just work on other people's servers.19:18
elninoI'm working with 7.9.3319:19
+danny_mkHey, give me your address and I will send you a linux system I have under my desk (you pay shipping).  I am not using it at all.19:19
+danny_mkdo you write any software for WebGUI?19:19
elninothank you, but I'm just a parttime freelancer, if I take anything more on my family will suffer consequences. I did before kids.19:20
elninothe oldtimers remember me, I don't know if I've ever really "met" you.19:20
elninonice meeting you. =)19:21
+danny_mknice meeting you too.  I know what you mean, with two teenagers, the animals that they wanted and now I have to take care of and a full family life outside of this job it can be pretty hectic.  My favorite vacation right now would be a sleep weekend, a weekend were I could sleep undisturbed as much as I wanted.19:22
elninoyour last post didn't comeup very clear... 19:23
+danny_mksummary = I understand :-)19:23
elninolol.19:23
elninoyou dont' know by anychance what the difference is between the EMSTicket and the EMSSubmission tables, are do you? i"m trying to get a list of the choices of events on an ems system.19:23
+danny_mkunfortunately not, not really involved that deep at this point.19:24
elninodo you work for pb?19:24
elninoI didn't know daviddelikat did. - that must be new.19:25
@daviddelikatelnino:  just finishing up my first year19:26
@daviddelikatunfortunately I have not been able to be on IRC much19:26
+danny_mknope, I just help when I can, I am a developer by profession and love Perl so WebGUI is a natural fit were I work.19:26
elninohey! congrats! I guess, it has been a while since I've logged in here.19:26
elninodanny_mk - that was me 4-5 years ago.19:27
@daviddelikatI get a jumpy duck when somebody mentionsmy name so I try to check when that happens19:27
elninowebgui is FUN19:27
elninolol19:27
@daviddelikatotherwise I have no idea whats going on19:27
@daviddelikatthere have been a few times I wanted to conenct with you about stuff you were dealing with19:27
elninook. i'll mention your name more so you get more jumpy ducks. 19:28
@daviddelikatbut I never seem to be on when you are19:28
@daviddelikatthanks19:28
@daviddelikatthe duck gets bored19:28
+danny_mkWebGUI can be a lot of things, It works great for user management, I use it as my front end to many other language frameworks including Java(JSF), catalyst, dancer and RT.19:28
elninoyes, sorry. we bought a forecosed home so I've been focusing on that19:28
elninolot's of outside work this year, this fall/winter it's the basement.19:29
elninodanny_mk, that sounds interesting, are you a programmer only, or do you host too?19:30
+danny_mknope, strictly programming19:33
elninohosting is hard to find. 19:34
+danny_mkversion 8 should help with that19:34
+danny_mkWebGUI could definitely benefit from a local REST authentication/authorization system19:35
+danny_mkI have to work on that later19:35
elninopatspam was working on somethign that would allow wg to run on a shared environment. - I wonder how that is going???19:39
elninodaviddelikat - you dont' know by anychance what the difference is between the EMSTicket and the EMSSubmission tables, are do you? i"m trying to get a list of the choices of events on an ems system. or find a report that lists the events and signees from an EMS system.19:40
@daviddelikatthat bit of info is definately buried somwhere in the deep recesses of my mind19:40
@daviddelikatI worked extensively on that sistem a few years ago19:40
@daviddelikat< ' accessing ' >  ...19:41
@daviddelikatlet me peak at some code19:42
@daviddelikatan EMSSubmission is when someone wants to participate as a presenter at your conference19:44
@daviddelikatyou have to make an EMSSubmissionForm in order to accept submissions19:45
@daviddelikatan EMSTicket is something someone buys in order to attend the event19:47
elninoyep, which I figured the EMSSubmisssion would then be "accepted" and turned into a EMSTicket. so I figued they would duplicate, because EMSSubmission as the details I'm looking to display in my list of tickets.19:47
@daviddelikatno a submission is a presenter19:47
elninoah. i iddn't see emssubmission.ticketId19:47
@daviddelikata ticket is an attender19:48
elninothat's what must be tying them.19:48
@daviddelikatyes19:48
elninothe attender would be registrant....19:48
@daviddelikatyes19:48
elninook. I think I got it. thanks!19:48
@daviddelikatyour welcome19:48
@daviddelikatglad to catch up with you again19:48
elninolikewise!19:49
@daviddelikatyou should look into the EMSSubmissionForm for signing up volunteers19:51
elninowell, I'm not sure how that would work, because there are slots of positions, and the slots get filled as people "purchase tickets"19:53
elninopositions are predetermined.19:53
@daviddelikatah19:54
elninoyep, I just looked. Yep, the EMS system is SO close to what I want.19:55
elninothe terms and wordign is terrible, and the badge thing is confusing and clunky. so I'm trying to figure out how to make it more user-friendly.19:56
elninobut functionally it'sperfect.19:56
@daviddelikatso you could use the submission forms to create submissions that people buy tickets for19:56
@daviddelikatshould be able to change the wording in the i18n files19:56
elninowell, I imported tickets. too many of them.19:56
@daviddelikatseems ike the badge part should be hidable19:57
@daviddelikator that could have been a future feature19:57
elninoI think it is, I have custom templates everywhere, I'm just not "up" on my YUI stuff. it's all guess work and time consuming.19:58
elninoack. EMSSubmission is EMPTY now where is the ticket's description? I must of misunderstood something <rereading>20:02
sbaurthat brings up a question for me. Are there any tutorials about extending YUI in a webgui environment? I've run into something with DataForms, and figuring out how to do what I want with YUI was beyond my understanding. I submitted a support request and got an answer, but definitely not in the easy, or easy to find category of problems20:03
elninostarters - you can find the docs for YUI 2.2.2 in your webgui distribution under extras/yui/docs/.  which is appartly not necessarily the latest version of YUI20:07
sbaurkewl20:08
elninohttp://www.webgui.org/wgtv/writing-with-yui20:08
elninohttp://www.webgui.org/wgtv/yui-overview20:08
elninohttp://www.webgui.org/wgtv/yui-navigations20:09
elninoI did a search for YUI on webgui's site, there is more there than I recall. I picked the "good ones"  but there probably is more there. I needd to watch these myself.20:09
sbaurthanks elnino. hopefully that will help me get a handle on stuff20:09
elninome too!20:09
elninohttp://www.webgui.org/community-wiki/yui20:10
sbaura lot of the wgtv is less than helpful I've found. The quality makes it difficult to learn anything20:10
elninoagreed. soem of them have handouts that help a bit.20:14

qwebirc64505Hi. I noticed that another wre, 0.9.4 has been released. Are (0.9.6, 0.9.4) they both for webgui 8?18:45
+danny_mkHmmm... not sure who is working on that.  Hang around, someone may answer the question, the guys tend to walk away from their computers a lot.18:52
sbaur0.9.4 will work for 7.x18:53
sbaurI just moved a 7.6.35 site to a box with 0.9.418:53
sbaurjust be sure to run testEnvironment.pl...18:54
@scrottieperlDreamer does those.  he isn't on here so the best way to get his attention is to post messages on the forum on webgui.org.19:16
qwebirc64505Can I use CentOS-6.x or does it have to be 5.x?19:18
sbaurI was on 5.x19:18
sbaurI tried getting the WRE (before 0.9.4) to work on centos 6 and had problems, so decided to go back to 519:19
qwebirc64505What are some of the wre-0.9.4 server's requirement? With wre-0.9.3 I had to install imagemagick...should anything else be installed? mysql!19:23
sbaurthe wre should have everything already included19:24
sbaurthough you will definitely need to run testEnvironment.pl to install specific perl modules that might not be there for your version19:25
qwebirc64505Is all I need, a bare minimal CentOS-5.x (32 / 64 bit) server?19:27
sbaurThat should work, yes.  But my server, was  a PB supplied one. it's possible perlDreamer did some work behind the scenes that I'm not aware of. OTOH, I'm setting up my own non PB server and haven't run into any issues yet as far as specific software needing to be there (besides maybe gcc and some other dev stuff to get those aforementioned perl modules in)19:29
@scrottieqwebirc, I haven't looked at what perlDreamer actually released, but up until now, the wre has been 32 bit19:55
@scrottieyou can run 32 bit binaries on a 64 bit machine, but you run into problems when you try to compile C code19:55
@scrottieperl modules with C parts (XS modules) built on a 64 bit system for a 32 bit WRE need lots of hand holding and flags set and sometimes more than that19:56
@scrottieI've been encouraging people to do the source install if they want to use a 64 bit VM19:56
@scrottie(installing perl modules happens when you run testEnvironment.pl and it finds modules added to wG since the WRE was released)19:57
qwebirc64505I followed wre-0.9.4 install instructions and I'm getting message: Perl Interpreter:                                 Please upgrade to 5.8.9 or later! Cannot continue without Perl 5.8.9 or higher. 20:09
@scrottietype:  which perl20:11
@scrottiewhat does that come back with?20:11
qwebirc64505I don't understand your request...please explain. All I have done was - untar wre-0.9.4  and webgui-7.10.26 in /data and followed the wre install instructions.20:15
sbaurat your command line, he'd like you to type "which perl"20:15
sbaurthen hit return20:15
qwebirc64505ok. I got - /usr/bin/perl20:16
@scrottie /usr/bin/perl is the perl that came with your OS.  it isn't the one that came with your WRE.  which is what I suspected when you said that you got the error "Please upgrade to 5.8.9 or later! Cannot continue without Perl 5.8.9 or higher."20:17
@scrottieyou missed step 8:  https://github.com/plainblack/wrebuild/blob/3388ff716f676bb286cf0ee9c392275914b16597/wre/docs/install.txt20:18
@scrottieamong other things, setenvironment prepends /data/wre/sbin and /data/wre/prereqs/bin to your PATH environment variable, so that the command shell looks for programs in there first.20:19
qwebirc64505Thanks. I forgot to set environment in duplicate console.20:20
@scrottiesure thing.  and makes sense.  I don't have that in my bashrc either.20:22
qwebirc64505Re webgui 8. Is it this easy to install?20:35
@scrottieI'm working on an installer for it.20:35
@scrottieyou're welcome to test it.20:35
@scrottieit's supposed to target Debian, RedHat, and generic Linux systems that already have perl and mysql installed but so far I've just been testing it on Debian.20:36
sbaurscrottie, when you are mostly ready (and I have some time) I could test the redhat stuff for you20:37
@scrottiexdanger has a quickie shell script that installs it too, on a fresh Debian, but I wouldn't recommend running it on an existing system you care about.  no error checking.  but people have had good luck with it.20:37
@scrottiesbaur, if you wanted to save me some digging around, look at https://gist.github.com/2973558, search through there for the "apt-get" lines, and see if you can guess which packages I need to install instead on RedHat20:42
qwebirc64505Scrottie, Will it install on current OS versions both 32 & 64 bit? 20:43
@scrottieqwebirc, re: wG8, it comes with some install instructions, but those aren't for using the WRE.  I have some install instructions for installing it on top of the WRE in a gist somewhere that I've been meaning to merge into there, but the WRE has been in limbo so I've been waiting for perlDreamer to release this WRE.20:43
@scrottieqwebirc, the 8 installer I'm working on or the install instructions or in general?  in general, it'll install.  the install instructions that come with it and the installer are both essentially "source installs".  they use system packages, so 32/64 bit doesn't matter.20:44
@scrottie32/64 bit only becomes a problem with the WRE.20:44
qwebirc64505Will perl and mysql need to be the most current or the OS default at install?20:46
@scrottiethey don't need to be "the most current", but 5.8.9 is ancient20:47
@scrottie5.10.0 has serious bugs in it that make it not recommended for production use20:47
@scrottie5.8.9 is a maintenance release from 2008 that is mostly bugfixes on top of a release from 2002.  so, feature wise, it's ten years out of date.20:49
@scrottie5.16.1 is out.20:50
@scrottiethe latest 5.12.x is recommended, by me.20:50
@scrottieor newer.20:50

qwebirc96985Hi Scrottie. I tried installing your webgui 8 script but ran into issues. I updated to perl-5.14.2 http://szabgab.com/download-and-install-perl.html and installed Percona musql on CentOS 6.20:00
qwebirc96985Error message, http://pastebin.com/q5kDJPUN20:02
haarghow did you update perl?20:36
@scrottie"Can't locate ExtUtils/MakeMaker.pm in @INC"21:02
@scrottielooking at this, it seems like qwebirc96985 still doesn't have a handle on PATH21:03
@scrottie"(@INC contains: /usr/local/lib64/perl5 /usr/local/share/perl5 /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl" ... if you did install a perl, I'm guessing you build it from source (tar -xzvf perl-.....tar.gz, ./configure PREFIX=/usr/local, etc)21:04
@scrottieand then you went and ran the system perl.21:04
@scrottieit also looks like your Debian system hasn't been updated in ages.21:04
@scrottieI'd discourage you from maintaining two perl installs if you're not clear on how to invoke one or the other of them and know which one is which and what you have installed with each of them.21:04
@scrottiealso, you're going to need to backup your system then do apt-get dist-upgrade, if your system perl (the one in /usr/bin) is 5.8.21:05
@scrottiethe installer script is alphawhere.  while I'm happy to see what interesting environments people throw at it (right now it's clear that I need to make it recognize older perls as such and perhaps offer to do something about it), you'll probably get frustrated with it before it ever works for you.21:07
qwebirc96985I'm on CentOS 6. I source install perl on system.21:07
@scrottieyour best bet is probably to run the WRE on a new 32 bit Linux install.  your second best option is probably to dist-upgrade that thing and follow the sourc einstall instructions.21:07
@scrottieokay, well, there's zero support for CentOS in my installer right now.21:08
@scrottieit won't install the many packages it needs automatically on there yet.21:08
@scrottieI need to figure out what the names of the packages on CentOS are first.21:08
qwebirc96985OK. I will try a Debian install next wk.21:08
@scrottiewell... it doesn't matter if you do Debian or RedHat if you're using WebGUI's source install instructions21:09
@scrottieif you use the WRE, unless this just changed, you need a 32 bit install21:09
@scrottiethe WRE install instructions for wG8 aren't bundled with WebGUI 8 right now21:09
@scrottiehttps://github.com/plainblack/webgui/blob/master/docs/install.txt ... that's the source install instructions for wG21:10
@scrottieif you did that, you'd want to use the perl you installed into /usr/local/bin21:10
@scrottieuse it = make sure it comes before the other perl in your path21:11
@scrottieeg, your PATH should look like /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin21:11
@scrottiewhich it might already21:11
@scrottiedo:  echo $PATH21:11
@scrottieI won't lie.  getting through the wG install instructions is a chore.  when PlainBlack hires someone, it usually takes them a week to make it through without missing something, missing an error message, misinterpreting something, or so on.  and there are probably errors in those instructions.  I'll help, but, brace yourself.21:12
qwebirc96985path = /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin21:12

@scrottieoh boy.  today is going to be one of those days.21:29
@scrottieI started going to bed at a half way reasonable hour, too, which is a major victory, but I'm still sleeping in until the same time.  I guess I should just set an alarm =|21:32

ckotilAnyone know why the Nav asset orders child asset based on Rank, but the drag n drop stuff changes contentPosition?18:50
ckotilim using the Nav asset to render a table of contents. it would be nice to get the drag n drop to change the order on the nav asset. Any advice/workarounds to make that consistent?18:52
haargpaye layouts can position items in any way on the page18:56
haargthere's no way to directly correlate that with a simple linear order18:56
ckotilhttp://www.webgui.org/rfe/request-for-enhancement/drag-and-drop-assets-in-page-view-changes-asset-ranking18:57
ckotilaye18:57
ckotilwell crap.18:58
ckotilif the nav asset had template variables for content position, then i'd be all set18:58
ckotili may have to make that happen18:58
haargthat sounds painful19:10
ckotilwhat if I expose the contentPositions variable from the Layout template to the nav asset via a scratch variable? then use some TT or H:T:E foo to get the order correct by matching on the assetIds?19:14
ckotilif scratch variables wont help here, I can add contentPositions to the nav asset template variables, and maybe do it that way. 19:15
ckotiljust not very elegant 19:15
haargthat sounds horrid19:19
@scrottiehow does the Nav asset order stuff now?  arbitrarily?19:20
haargrank by default i think, but i think it can sort by an arbitrary field19:21

ckotilrank is all i know19:24
ckotili was hoping to find something abotu contentPosition in the template doc's or the .pm didn't see anything about it19:24
@scrottierank sounds pretty reasonable.  did you need the actual rank to be different than the order they appear in the nav?19:50
ckotilso the layout has drag and drop functionality. when you move child assets around whle on a layout, you then create a contentPositions list19:51
ckotilbut the navigation asset is oblivious of that19:51
@scrottieso you want this feature because you think it should be there...?  or is the lack of it causing a problem?19:53
ckotilboth19:53
@scrottiewhat problem is it causing?19:54
ckotilI've got a table of contents on a Layout generated by a nav asset. the only way to move things around in the TOC is to edit the rank via assetManage. meanwhile, the Layout has drag n drop. but it doesnt change the order of the TOC19:54
ckotilif Nav Asset understood contentPositions, then all would be well in the world19:54
@scrottieah, you don't just want the Nav asset to understand content positions, but you want it to share the info with the Layout.19:55
@scrottieif it had its own concept of content positions, then you'd have the same problem.19:55
ckotilso the Layout does 'own' contentPositions19:56
ckotilnav asset doesn't need it's own19:56
ckotilI could generate the TOC using the Layout PageLoop, but it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the nav asset19:56
@scrottieI could imagine an "asset order" API that a lot of things publish and consume.  calendar, shop ("shelf"), image gallery, collaboration system all have their own concepts of asset orders.19:58
@scrottieplus the layout, of course.19:58
ckotilthat would be useful19:59
@scrottieas soon as Nav is pulling the asset order from Layout, people would wonder why it only pulls from Layout19:59
ckotilyah. im looking into adding a new sort rule to Navigation.pm right now. to check to see if there is a contentPositions for the parent asset (in my case this will be the Layout)19:59
@scrottiehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wTWWjYTe1I just in case anyone missed it20:12
ckotilthanks for the brownie points w/ my wife :)20:13
@scrottieyou betcha!  =)20:14
ckotilhavent been to the Cincy zoo in ages. !!!! haha @ ending20:14
@scrottiesqeeeee!!!20:14
ckotilim zeroing in on a new rule that will make my sorting by contentPositions a reality20:21
ckotila new order by20:21
ckotilgroup by assetData.assetId order by FIELD(asset.assetId,% magic happens here, the comma sepearated list of contentPositions %);20:22
@scrottieI'm scared.20:24
ckotilthe AssetLineage->getLineageIterator is scary20:25
@scrottiea bit, yeah.  the approach makes sense.  it could be made more presentable though.20:26
ckotilcrud. so the nav assets parent isn't what I thought it would be. Bc im using an assetProxy macro in the layout template to include the nav asset. (and this is where the TOC is generated). trying to get the assetId of the layout to retrieve contentPositions20:27
@scrottiehrm.20:27
haargaside from the issue of contentPositions being owned by layout, it's just impossible to have an accurate mapping between order and contentPositions21:01
ckotilyeah, for a general purpose feature.21:02
ckotilbut for hacking purposes, it just might work.21:02
ckotilmy hacking*21:02
@scrottieright.21:05
ckotili got it working. sort of. now to clean it up21:43
ckotilsaweet21:47
ckotili wish the TOC were generated via AJAX so I could refresh them on the fly, after a change to contentPositions. 21:47
ckotili may just add a meta refresh after a change to contentPositions.21:47
ckotilbah, this is proving to be a pain in the neck. proof in concept does work, but it's going to be tough to make sure my changes don't break anything else21:57
ckotilwhen you're on a layout that only has articles beneath it, the content positions work great for dictating the order in the TOC. but see the issue is that Layouts don't appear in contentPositions, so the TOC get's all wonky :/22:12
* ckotil put's the one down, and backs away22:38
